kitchen outlets

I have a U shaped kitchen with barstools on one side. We are also putting a waterfall edge at the end. My question is...my electrician wants to put an outlet on the waterfall where the hole is now. I don’t think it’s necessary to code. I have two under the overhang where the barstools are and every two feet around the rest of the kitchen countertop.
This work is in Naples Florida.

You’re not putting a silly fad waterfall on that peninsula end. It isn’t designed to receive it. Thankfully. There isn’t even enough support for your countertop overhang here. You’ve got a major design failure on multiple fronts.

And yes, you are required to have outlets on the end of the peninsula, within 6” of the counter surface. Or else they are required to be designed into the working side of the island. You can put any outlets you want along the rear. But they don’t count as the required ones.

Here is another thread that may give you some ideas.

That peninsula contains a sink and DW? And you intend to insert the end of the counter into the wall at the end (hence the slot)?

As wide as that overhang is, you may need some kind of support (rods or steel bars, corbels, etc) to hold up that counter, especially behind the sink.

The outlets can not go in the deep overhang seating area, which is what she is planning. Not without having one on the end to satisfy code.

Your problem is you don't understand the picture. It's not complete. What you have to do is actually read the code to understand what they are saying.

There's nothing in the code that precludes the receptacle for the island being located on any side of it as long as it's within 12" of the countertop AND there is not more than a 6" overhang over it. There's nothing special about peninsula or island seating. In fact "pantries, breakfast rooms, dining rooms, and similar areas" have to follow the kitchen requirements for countertop receptacles.

The "room dividing" feature is a red herring here. I believe your picture is actually wrong with the code. There is a requirement for "free-stasnding bar type counters or railings" but that just brings in the 6' wall spacing requirements, it doesn't say it somehow invalidates the thing is a kitchen peninsula.

Getting back to her picture, I'm not sure what goes on the left side (with regard to the picture) of the counter) but if there's less than a 6" overhang, she can put the required receptacle there as long as it's within 12" of the countertop.

That’s about a 15” of overhang (without proper support) that will be covered with counter, which is why it will not pass inspection to have an outlet there. It’s just an “extra”. The one that counts is the one on the side of the cabinet.

In that case, then the overhang limit precludes the receptacle underneath from counting (still worth having, I had a similar countertop in my previous house). The other possible place to put it would be on the side of the cabinet facing the "knee room" of the seating area. It could be closer than 6" to the edge of the counter.
