Please help me decorate upstairs loft game room!

We have this upstairs loft in our house that we have designated as our son's game room/play room. It looks over our den area. I'd also like to put some sort of door, shutter, etc. for privacy/noise barrier... still trying to figure that out!

we are about to pull up the blue carpet (YAY!!!) and put laminate wood floors down in a darkish walnut shade. All of the trim and doors will be white. I am planning on completely re-decorating this space. We may wind up taking our existing sofa from our den and moving it up here as well; it is an espresso brown leather. I just don't know where to go with the room's decor.... I'd like to remove a good bit of the stuff off the walls, even though my husband has all of his sports stuff up there because that was his "man cave" prior to having our son.

Any ideas? Suggestions?

The spacing on the balusters is so wide that it does not meet code. I would do either of the following:

1) install intermediate balusters, or

2) install a solid half height wall that meets code.

Not sure you would be open to it, but carpet, rather than wood, will help absorb some of the noise from the area. I would try to incorporate your husband's sports decor. It will mean a lot to him, and your son may enjoy it, too. The space can remain a "cave" yet, as it's not very visible from your main living area.

How old is your son? I'd get him involved in choosing the decor. It will make a difference in how he "owns" the room and takes care of it.

He is 7, so he really doesn't care! We thought about carpet, but the room is also connected to a bedroom that we want wood floors for. We are planning on getting a large area rug for the space as well.

RE: the rail/code-- that's how the house was built so we aren't sure what the next step would be... especially since our son is old enough to know not to put his head between the rails. :)

Came home from work last night to the carpet being gone!!! As I was helping upstairs I was thinking that I would like to incorporate some of the sports memorabilia but I would also like it to be less muddled and all over the place!

oh my! those pillow prices are scarey. when you get there i will be happy to give loads of pillows and places to go where the pillows are <$25.00. take great pride in that. you can put padding under the rug. What is he interested in?
