-You have some good potential there with the stick-built roof structure. I agree with the basic assessment by KOH, but the upright 2x4s are keeping the ceiling from sagging, not keeping the ridge up, and the ridge board only serves a structural purpose until the framing is sheathed.

I am a little concerned that the rafters do not seem to exactly meet at the ridge and appear to be staggered, but that may be just the angle of the photo. Also it appears that the rafters to the left form a shed dormer, so there may be some other concerns, such as dealing with the outward pressure if the ceiling is removed. Some kind of collar tie may be necessary to replace the role played by the ceiling.

I second the motion: Have a professional look at it before you start tearing your ceiling out.

i just had this done last monh. absolutely love it. went from 8' popcorn ceiling to vaulted 11' at center. 26 year old house. i have a wonderful, experienced carpenter. he brought in heavy beams for support. if i knew how to move the pic from my ideabook to here, i would. but you can look at my ideabooks/ceilings. it's the last pic and it's captioned : my new bdrm ceiling. let me know what you think.

The other posters are correct.... you have some potential here, but really need some professional structural guidance before you start tearing out those ceiling joist.........just about anything can be accomplished, the question is how much money are you willing to throw at it to get what you want........?
