This is a common and recurring question. If you search for lighting you will find many helpful threads.

In general, there are 3 categories of lighting, each of which has a different purpose, and thus the lighting fixtures and locations vary, based on the architectural design of a house.

The three categories of lighting are:

--Task lighting: lighting designed for illumination of specific, identitied tasks, i.e., task lighting for work areas in kitchens, etc.;

--Ambient lighting: lighting designed for overall, ambient illumination in a given space or spaces, and;

--Decorative or accent lighting: lighting designed to create an attractive, warm "glow" or "spot" to create attention or otherwise make a space more "humanly inviting and comfortable"

And for night lighting and late night/early morning trips to the bathroom in the dark, there are simple "night lights" with sensors, which plug into a convenient electrical outlight and turn on and off automatically during evening dark and daylight times.

I did search lighting, but didn't see any about this. Perhaps I didn't search through enough pages? Or maybe even the wrong group?
