I was told that the privacy fence in front of my apartment belongs to the complex behind me, so I'm sort of wary of putting anything heavy on it, for fear of damaging it, so I'm thinking maybe of putting up a cattle panel a couple of feet in front of the fence so I can get behind it to trim it away from their fence.

I think it would eventually grow up into the elm tree if I don't, since it has tendrils, and then take over the magnolia, so I want to try to keep it on this side of the fence. Right now, I have cuttings rooting in full sun, so those will have to be moved into shade, although they don't seem to mind it right now. I guess they won't bloom in shade, though.

At any rate, it's a beautiful vine just as is, and the one I got the cuttings from is growing up and over large shrubs and I imagine it will take them over unless it's knocked back by a hard frost. We'll see. I do miss my hydrangeas, especially my lace cap, so this would be a great substitute for those if I can grow it safely without damaging anyone's property.
