Your thoughts on Mourning Dove

Searched and found some people’s thoughts on Mourning Dove from around 2012-2013. Have your thoughts changed any since then? I’m looking to get one but was told it was a very slow grower. I didn’t get that impression by what people were saying back then.

unfortunately, the black berries from the dogwood tree (my hosta shade for potted hostas) that the birds are feasting on currentry, drop half-eaten onto the hostas below, leaving unsightly blotches. :(

I purchased my MD in 2015 with 7 divisions in the clump, which multiplied to 21, 15, and 17 in subsequent years. I wouldn't call that slow, rather "good" growth. It still has not been planted. Who knows how much bigger that clump would be with lots of room to spread???

I really love this hosta. It has the same easy-growing traits as June and her progeny and almost the same substance. What is not to love? It is elegant, has excellent substance, and retains its beautiful colour all season. I don't think it is prone to sunburn and this year, especially was a scorcher. This photo does not capture the blue very well but it does not go greener. It gets some direct sun later in the afternoon but is shaded most of the morning. Dark Star behind it is a green/blue so you can easily compare the lighter colour in MD.

I highly recommend Mourning Dove and have not heard a negative comment about it yet on this forum.

I planted mine last summer and it has grown very well... better than: Summer Breeze, El Nino, Teaspoon - all of which I thought would be more vigorous. And, I thought it looked good all season, and still looks good in late August...

It is one of our 20 favorite hostas. Maybe even top 10. Not the fastest grower, but not really slow, either. Elegance like this doesn't happen overnight.

Well, I have never owned one, but people who do own it seem to love it. Looks like a really beautiful hosta. I'd buy it.

What David, Don, and Jo said.... definitely buy it. I have terrible soil and too much sun, and my Mourning Dove is beautiful still. I haven’t measured it, but I just planted it last year (got it bareroot from Hallson’s)... the Gold Regal behind it was also planted last year and GR is 31” across already- so that gives you some scale.

Grows well, comes up very early in my garden, starts out beautiful and stays beautiful. I agree with all the comments above, grab one ASAP.

Buy it! It's gorgeous...I love to watch it change from spring to fall, always elegant...It stands together with Prairie Moon, a wonderful pair.
