You’re so brave, to run out into the torrent! I’ve dragged a table into the garden to cover hostas when hail was predicted. Now I just go take pictures before the storm.

I had an order come in and as I was planting a big thunderstorm rolled in. We live on top of a hill, but I decided I needed to get them in the ground that night. I saw a nearby flash of lightning and didn't even count to two before I heard the thunder. I decided the Hosta would be fine until morning. And then I had to replant a number of the ones I planted in the rain anyway.

Hmm, nothing crazy here folks just some gardeners doing what gardeners do. Some of my eccentric garden habits, running around in the rain making sure all of the rain barrels get filled, and direct the overflow away from buildings. I get soaked slip and slide and secretly fear the neighbors are going to take pics or videos and post about their nut neighbour. But doing this means I have rain water for the hostas. I Fenced in my hosta beds to keep the dogs from damaging them. I have been know to use all my old sheets colourful and patterns to protect from killing frosts. I start seeds under lights in the basement. I sell as much as I can to earn money to buy more hosta. So come spring you can find me hauling trays and trays and trays up and down the basements staris and outside then back in at night when hardening them off. Plus digging out the veg bed to make a cold frame in April hauling a truck bed of manure, my list goes on and on so crazy is relative.

Well, I just finished removing the spent flower petals from the seed pods - does that count? Most of the seed heads are attractive if you pull off the dead petals.

That's so cute! I thought about putting umbrellas over hostas that were scorching in this summer's extreme sun, but since they are in the front of the house I decided against it. Didn't want to be known as the crazy lady on the street.

I perfectly understand all of your stories! Thanks for sharing! It makes me feel a little less "crazy!"

Nicholsworth, I'd love to have another "crazy" neighbor. (LOL) I have put unused planters over my plants in the spring but no one else seems to be too concerned about the frost warning. A picture of your neighbor's yard would have been wonderful to see! Don't forget to take a picture next time!

Pattie, I would be tempted to cover my plants with an umbrella to protect them from the sun tool Luckily I have some shade from my trees.

Well, I am already the "crazy cat" lady so I might as well be the crazed hosta lady. I am preoccupied with putting markers on my urban yard to educate neighbors and of course those late night slug killing trips......not easily understood by others! :-)

djacob's comment reminded me of another neighbor that puts beer in a tuna can to catch slugs..I can't believe how many she gets..late night slug hunting and tuna cans of beer are both funny..

Good try with that umbrella! .....I've braved my wet, slippery slopes in the dark trying to throw sheets over hostas when I learned too late at night that a frost was expected. Now that I have Alexa I wonder if she'll be helpful by warning me earlier when it's still light out. As it is, she tells me no rain is expected ....while it's raining outside, lol.

I get up early in the morning to go and kill slugs before work. I do the beer thingy as well. When I come home after work , I go around and have a look at my hostas and make sure they are still there and doing fine.. I position the patio chairs so I can see certain Hostas( my favs) and when my husband moves the chairs........I move them back to where I want them.

djacob68, you reminded me of the night slug hunting! When I am out at night-----where I think I can be seen---I figure the neighbors must be saying "what in the world is she doing out there! There must be something 'wrong' with her!"

Sandyslopes, who is Alexa? Your slopes would certainly be more difficult to cover, I can see.

Shadow, sounds like you are doing a great job at keeping those slugs away from your garden! I would say your husband is "in training." LOL

Oh, and I forget about picture taking! When I take photos of my hosta (where I can be seen), I feel self conscious. I often take pictures of the same hosta because (1) I don't like the photo when viewed on the computer or (2) for seasonal change. How many times can one take a photo of the same hosta?

slugs like to eat slugs. When I mash one on a stepping stone, I find many more around it the next morning.

Slugs like to eat slugs? If the slugs are around the dead slug the next morning, perhaps they are attending the funeral?
