When it is in flower I could see it maxing out at around 3 feet tall and if growing for seed then it should be spaced appropriately. But when growing it to eat, harvested prior to flowering, it is a small plant and can be planted close.

And there are more types than just one.

I think of rocket/arugula as Eruca sativa which has several cultivars. I don't know of any which grow to a metre, even in flower. I usually grow Diplotaxus tenuifolia, wild rocket, which is more forgiving with water and temperature and self sows easily. That doesn't reach a metre either.

My experience is that arugula is shorter than 3 feet, 1 meter, in height while flowering as well. However, there are sources that do say it gets that tall if one does a Google search. Which is why I said that it could max out at that height.

(Off to a hardware store now to buy a whole drip-watering starter-kit for only $10, as I'm away a lot for work. How on earth can they make stuff at that price..?)

I raise it like floral_uk mentioned- I sow the seeds thickly and get a few cuttings before it bolts on me.

Someone was telling me yesterday that they can grow rocket in shade! That was news to me. My former vegetable garden is almost all shade now.

For wild rocket, I think both are true. It's just a few inches tall when at a good size for harvesting, so that's how tall it stays. But in areas with mild winters, the plant can perennialize, and eventually become a near-shrub with a woody stem. In this form, it can be close to a meter tall.

I like growing salad rocket but agree that wild is much easier to grow. My wild rocket has been in the ground for years and it doesn't get higher than about 15cm (although it sprawls, so if I were to pick it up it might be quite tall). Depends on where you are, but where I am the wild one explodes in spring, slows down in summer, and then keeps giving leaves in winter.

I grow salad rocket (Eruca sativa) for a mixture from autumn to early spring but honestly it tastes the same. Thing about that one is that it bolts quickly in spring where I am - if you are in a place with mild winters and can keep it sunny then autumn is the best time to sow. If sowing spring and you've got hot summers then keep it shaded.
