Rocket / arugula confusion

last modified: 7 years ago

Hi there ... spring is almost here - in Australia - I've just moved into a new apartment, and my first ever balcony garden awaits.

I love rocket [eruca sativa] in salads (apparently up there in North America you folks call it arugula). But there is much conflicting advice on how to plant it. One site says that as rocket grows up to a metre tall (3 feet), seedlings should be spaced by 40cm (16 inches). Other sites advise the opposite: "rocket can be planted incredibly close together" says one, "thin plants to 5cm (2 inches) apart" says another. That's wildly conflicting advice!

Have tried searching for photos of it growing, but they all show a low, ground-cover type of plant (examples below). Certainly nothing a metre tall!

So, I'm perplexed! If any experienced rocket/arugula growers are reading this, my balcony garden needs help!
