I hate to say it but if you have no painting experience I would not tackle that job. 90% of a good paint job is in the prep and for this type of furniture (i.e. heavy use) I would definitely use an oil based paint for durability. Maybe get a pro to do it? I do a lot of furniture painting and have had my fair share of redo's. And yes, I think navy would be gorgeous.

He won't always be four. Look at the options you will have with black head/foot boards for any age. If you invest in professional paint job for these beauties, do so with a view to longevity and ageless décor changes. 4 year old bedding and accessories will soon give way to more grown up choices. Patricia has a great example for you there. And I agree that it is a tremendous gift, I love them!

Remember, it's a kid's room. It doesn't have to match the decor of the rest of the house, and some (myself included) would say that a child's bedroom should not match the rest of the house because the function is so unique. Your son will have lots of changing interests and a really good, long-term paint job will carry him through them all and serve his own kids well, too!

Kids are rough on furniture. Unfortunately oil is the most durable, but the hardest to work with. I painted my son's furniture with oil over 20 years ago and it still looks good. Remember oil paint does tend to yellow. If you don't have any painting experience I would have someone else do it. Or if the cost is too much you might think about using spray paint. Spray paint is easier to use and gives you a smooth coverage if done correctly.
