Where is your location (growing zone/state?) as that would help to determine what you can grow well there. Here in Z-7 Va my favs are broccoli, cabbages, carrots, beets, spinach, collards, lettuces, radishes, and turnips. The window is closing fast on many of those but turnips grow fast and can be planted 2-3 times here. Spinach is a fall & winter fav as it overwinters for an early harvest, it's a tough plant and can be planted as seed up to mid- Nov. I've planted everything listed but the weather isn't cooperating, it too hot!

I love beets, so I do a fall planting of those. I also sowed snap peas, pea pods, Daikon radish, broccoli, and cauliflower. I forgot to sprinkle down some more Cilantro seeds, this reminds me I need to do that. I was looking forward to my brussels sprouts harvest, but when I looked yesterday those gross cabbage wormy-things were all over them - YUCK! I might be able to salvage a few sprouts here and there if I can manage not to vomit...

You have good collection of fall veggies that inspired me to plant beets.Is there special variety of beet seed for fall planting? Sorry for what happened to your Brussels sprouts.

No, you can just use whatever beet seed you find on the rack this time of year (or order).

I have noticed fall vegetables have a longer days to harvest than the same crop planted in spring. I am in zone 5 and hoping my carrots get much bigger than they are now. I planted middle of August, and days to harvest is supposed to be 70 days. They are only half grown now. Has anyone else noticed this?

The lower temperatures and fewer daylight hours cause plants to grow more slowly.

I have romanesco broccholi, a variety of lettuce, some purple cauliflower (by accident, we'll see how it goes) kale, radish and volunteer chard. Still thinking of garlic and beets. We have a UCH smaller garden that we used to, just a 4x8 bed for winter and a 10x20 in-ground for summer plus the 4x8. I'm happy with it!

Yes things initially grow pretty fast in late summer and then slow down gradually as the days get shorter. Carrots germinate much faster (around 1 week) in late July when I sow them. Mine are putting on some root size now and I've picked a few small ones to use on salads. I'll harvest the majority around Thanksgiving. Fall carrots are much sweeter than those harvested in summer.

I'd suggest planting 3-4 weeks earlier next season.
