Pyrography....decorated with a wood burning tool. In the 30's and 40's into the early 50's, kits were sold with plain wood "something" a box, a plaque or something, and then you decorated the item....and sometimes painted it.
Because of the overall squiggles, Iw ould say that's a nice example of the craft. Likely an earlier example....no way to know who made it....but worth what someone will pay. Currently on ebay boxes like that....without a person depicted, are bringing from $25 to $40...depending on size.

I have a wooden box similar shape and size given to me by my grandma. She said some fancy cigars probably came in it. She said wooden gift boxes with cigars were decorated, or plain. Maybe someone had a plain one and decorated it or it came that way. Mine is most likely a pre-decorated/carved with a picture on top.

Cigar boxes were not decorated with cigars in them...they did not "come" as gift boxes. Wooden cigar boxes were used for many things, like tramp art and just for keeping stuff in, but cigars didn't come in a gift box like that.
This box was never a cigar box.

So, I did see checking. Yes cigars would come in all manner of wooden boxes. One article said some cigar boxes where lined with cedar like mine. Some in more ornate form so could have a second life as a jewelry box, like mine. Mine did have kind of sticker label inside the top but fell off a few decades ago.
