The Calacutta would be nice, or you could consider a solid gray -- i did one called Alloy (maybe Alan and Roth? would have to check) that looked great with white cabinets. Used a clear glass backsplash with a hint of color. Don't have a photo handy.

Otherwise, I suggest combing the Photos section of this site, with search terms like "white cabinets" and "modern". See what combinations appeal to you, and start and ideasbook of those photos. You may find that there's an obvious combination that you love!

Doing a full height backsplash lends itself beautifully to a modern style, but it is expensive. There are some great ways to do an interesting modern backsplash with geometric or dimensional tile.
