Save up so you can add a built-in on the left to house the TV. For now, additional trim plus paint could enhance the current built-in bookcase. I'd trim out the top of the bookcase and across the stone and the other ceiling to unify and tie them into one more deliberate visual. Paint the interior backs of the built-in in your accent color, once you choose one. Actually, with your leather furniture, the stone looks great - a bit lodge-like and that's a good direction for a family and entertainment space.

So you don't think I should paint the stone? I just think it looks so dated...I'm just on the bench. I like your idea about painting the built-in white. Thanks for you in-put!

I think the stone is great. It's the built ins and the hokey mantle that really are a detriment to this space. I'd do as deco stated above and paint the built in or lose it altogether. Get a new fireplace screen and replace the mantle or stain it so it actually compliments the stone.

I am totally designer disabled...what color would you stain mantel? Think I could add crown molding to it?

The stone looks good. I would change out the existing mantel and design a full mantel over the stone. If you are keeping your wall color the same I would go with a cream color for the mantel, maybe accent with a glaze; If you are wanting to keep the built-in paint it a cream color as well with a accent color on the back, like decoenthusiaste mentioned. You can also change the black around the stone to a cream color to pull it all together.

There are to many angles going on in that room, square off that open door way. I agree take the book shelf out and talk to a local plaster company to wire that stone and put a smooth coat of stucco then smooth plaster over that..

Can you paint the wooden shelves on the right? It might not help with the angles but it will draw your eye there as an accent area.
