I searched for table top, cheval mirror, barley twist wood frame.

They are beautiful and I am wondering why, being the age they are, no mirrors are beveled? (Dumb question?)

I have a question for you.

Turn it upside down and look at the base of the feet.

Are they smooth or does it look like a screw went in there?

If it looks like a screw went in there, then that was the mirror that was supposed to be attached to a dresser, and was detached, and you don't have the dresser.

Another tip is the back of your mirror.

If this was a table top mirror, it was something that would be moved, so the back would have been finished more nicely.

It would have been covered with the same wood as the frame, and preferably with one piece of wood, not two.

A mirror that was meant to be screwed onto a dresser was mean to never be moved (except to be detached when moving the entire piece of furniture to prevent breakage.)

Also, look at the glass of the mirror itself.

Does it look like a perfect mirror?

If so, it is doubtful that it is 200 years old.

A mirror that old would have some defects in the silvering.

This could be from the 20th century without any problem.

I would say this is a vanity or shaving mirror from the 30s or 40s value around $100. You can find similar on ebay.

Well, it is also possible that the whole thing was dropped, the back piece of wood cracked as did the mirror, so the back piece of wood was discarded and the mirror replaced.

So if this was a genuine antique, it has lost it's value as an antique.

But it is still lovely.

You can take it someplace where someone can look at it close up, and look at the feet, and look at the screws in the back close up.

Any expert will know in two seconds if those are 20th century screws or 19th century screws, and they can also look at the piece and know if it was more hand turned (on the lathe) or more machine made.

Does Antique Road Show ever come to your town?

It may well have been a shaving mirror, and may have sat on a base of wood, and that base is gone as well.

i live in delaware. i have seen several of those. my understanding is that they are turn of the century on chest of drawers, i think it was high boys. they sell between $20-$50 here, but then 100 year old antiques are pretty common here.

A "Jacobethan" style thing from 1920's.
