Ok one more picture!

Here's one of mine that bloomed a couple of days ago, and I had another one bloom last night.

They are tricky to pollinate. In the past mine has bloomed in August instead of September, and I did get fruit, but not all pollination efforts were successful. The main thing to remember is that you have to pollinate within about 3-4 hours of the flower opening - if you wait until the next morning, it will be too late. Mine started opening around 7:30 PM and I started pollination efforts about an hour later and repeated every half hour. If you have a good flower, you will see a lot of yellow pollen collecting on the paint brush - this year I only saw very small amounts compared to previous years, but maybe it is enough. I also use my hand/fingers to attempt pollination - trying to mimic a bat. Just cup your hand around the interior or the open flower and shake it a bit, and hopefully some pollen will get transferred.

and a white interiorI pick the fruit when it starts to break open, but I put protection (like wire mesh) around the fruit to prevent possums or other critters from getting to it first. Fruit photos taken Oct 25, 2016. This one bloomed two months earlier, and so it takes about two months to get ripe fruit from a pollinated flower.

Thank you Lars! This information is so helpful! We almost didn't catch it blooming, but got lucky! Your bloom is stunning! That's great to know to pollinate it soon after it opens. We pollinated around 8pm last night, so hopefully it worked! So 2 months for fruit growth and ripening. And that's another great tip to put some protective covering over it so the critters won't get it. I've been tempted to set up a night camera because there seems to be a lot of action in my backyard at night! I had my first flower this year, too! The fruit should be ripe in a few more weeks.

Growing Pitahaya (Dragon Fruit)

That is so great Lgteacher! It is so great to see it almost ripe. That's wild that the flower is still attached! Exciting!

Started with cuttings, and after several years, I finally succeeded! In August, I got fruit: white flesh and magenta, both delicious. The white is a larger DF than the magenta one. I believe I have more fruit coming :-)
