Help with entryway rug size!

My front entryway is 7’W x 17’L. What size rug should I get? This one is 5x8 and I like it but not sure it’s the right size. I would also need a small rug by the doors to wipe your feet. So thinking I should get a longer rug. But can’t find anything long enough but the right width. Any ideas? Designers, what’s the right way to handle this entryway? Thank you in advance!

I like the rug too but I don’t think its going to work. I think you need something more narrow. My unsolicited advice is that you should only have the bench here, but not the console.

No advice but that’s a really pretty rug.

As groveraxle depicted, just measure the width between the console table and the bench leaving a few inches clearance on each side and then you have the max width for a runner. I have also had "runners" made up from carpeting and have it bound. You can get a great many different patterns and colors and they could do a matching one for the front door area. A black background would take a beating and not show much dirt. I have had them for years with great success.

I think this one comes in a runner size as well and works quite well.

You can use two rugs as well, just butted together or separated by a step or two. Lots of options. A very pretty entry, btw!

Lupins4, thanks! Those look great! And I thought the same about the width. But I do think I like the entry table there as we actually use it quite a bit! But will consider ..thx!

Groveraxle, love how that looks. Especially the 1st pic. Thank you!!

Flo, thank you! We still have a few things left to do in the entry aside from a rug. Need to hang a mirror on the left, out in baseboards (whole house!) and get a new light fixture which I’m struggling with. But I love it too! And great idea re: rugs. Question though.. how would I get carpet bound? Go to a carpet store? Could they adjust an existing area rug? Thank you!!

Yes. A good carpet store has sources they use for binding. Just make sure they do it so it isn’t visible.

Thanks Flo! I went to an area rug store today. :)
They make custom rugs! But there are a million choices and I’m stuck with what kind of rug to get (pattern/look). I’d like something beige/grey possibly with bits of blue/teal. I don’t want anything too busy but not plain or boring. And I’m concerned about entryway rugs going with our living room rug (photo below) because it opens right into it. I thought subtle stripes might work? Here’s a photo of some options.

Thoughts? Other ideas or suggestions? Thank you!!!!

The top gray would work well with what i assume is living room pattern. You can mix patterns as long as their scale is different. These look fine. Boring possibly but what about a 3-4” border in black or dark gray? That would bring some interest but not fight with pattern on living room.

    Good ideas!

If I go with stripes, any thoughts on the direction of the stripes? Would it be bad to have the rug in front of the doors to have stripes going perpendicular to the doors and the rug in the middle to be parallel? If I get 2 rugs made, they would have stripes across but they would lay differently in the room. See diagram). Does that make sense? Is that ok? Or should I have them made to have the stripes the same way? Thx! Here’s the stripes next to my LR rug and my DR rug.

Hi again, another question... do both entry rugs have to match? Should they match? I assume yes but just checking. What’s the design ‘rule’? Thx!

I found another rug I like (more color & interest) but not sure if it’s too traditional next to our living room rug. (Pls ignore the rug rolled up..that’s going in our dining room!) I have no idea how to have rugs near each other that look good together. Any thoughts on this one? Thanks!!

Your new rug is pretty but If you are a neat and tidy person that fringe will drive you nuts. I suggest you choose one without fringe.

I know from experience that the vacuum will pull the fringe and make them shorter & uneven.

T Hill and Lil S, thank you. I hadn’t even noticed the fringe until I got home with the rug. Then it hadn’t occurred to me that it would drive me nuts but I agree..I think it will. So I’ll return.

Why is it so hard to pick/find a runner!?

    Thanks for your help!

Hi BeverlyFLADeziner, thanks! And yes, we desperately need a new light fixture in the entry, along with every other room!! They are all 1981. And after getting our floors installed recently, we haven’t hung everything back up yet. Will hopefully do that soon!

I have a square mirror for there but am thinking maybe round since everything is a big squared off. How big can I go with a round mirror here? 8’ ceilings, 7x14’ entryway (roughly). Thanks!!

I'm not saying don't get a rug with fringe. I'm just saying beware of the vacuum :)

If you purchase a round mirror select a mirror that is about 80% of the width of your console

You don't need a second rug at the end of the runner. You don't want the place to end up as a patchwork of rugs.

Thanks BeverlyFLADeziner. I’ll work on finding a large mirror. I’m also working on finding a light. I’m considering this one. But I think dark bronze would be best so I’m looking. Then maybe a dark bronze framed mirror? Thx!
Groveraxle, thank you for your comment. I agree that I don’t want a patchwork which is why I originally thought 2 matching runners. One in front of door (across door). And then one down the middle of entryway. Would that not work? I think we need a door to wipe shoes. Would love your thoughts! Thx!

I found this light in bronze! Thoughts? And either round mirror or maybe this?? Thanks!

A more put-together width for the hallway rug would be a "runner". The furniture would be off the carpet. Runners can come in very long lengths. If it were me, I'd make it almost the length of the hallway, but from photos, it's hard to judge what doors, etc. you have at the end.

I'm not sure what your tastes are, but judging from the current rug, an oriental might work for you. I'd pick up the shade of the wood floor in an oriental rug with saturated colors.

This is a 3’ wide by 13’ long runner perfect for your foyer.....It looks like you have about 4’ between your bench and console do 3’ should do the trick! great Price...

    These come 16’ long...

Thanks Julie @HIWE!! Those are great options. So do you think just one runner down the middle is the way to go and nothing immediately in front of the doors? Thx!

If you go with one of the 16’ runners it will be close enough to the door for guest to feel comfortable to step in...looks very nice but I would remove the bench so the foyer has a more open feeling when entering.
