Kobesam Love your house! When I read that your house was in southwestern Ontario I had to laugh as I live in London. I use to live in St.Thomas and I miss my old home there. Thank you for all the picks and I can relate to your comments, either home renos or vacations. All the best and enjoy your beautiful property.

Except for the first 8 years of our marriage, I have always lived in old houses (prewar or '50's era) . Currently in one circa 1939. We remodeled it two years ago after tornado damage forced us into it. (we owned it but were not living in it at the time--long story!) I made a point to take photos (although not as well as you did!) before and during, and you have inspired me to put together a slide show like this. Almost no one still alive ever saw it pre-remodel so can't appreciate the changes unless they see pics! I enjoyed your captions!

Loved looking at your pics. You've done an amazing job. I've always wanted to do a reno on a heritage home, but have never been able to convince "the other half". Where are you in southwestern Ontario? (I went to school at Western.)

Love what you shared. And the horse theme (and your screen name) piqued my interest. Love the equestrian touches. I can't imagine that equine stuff is all just for looks though--there's got to be more to your story than just your horsey décor. Your house definitely speaks OF you, and that's rather wonderful.

Love the flagstone walk. I didn't see any basement photos. Having just spent 1/2 hour in the nasty basement of our 1895 Ohio home during a tornado warning, I am not feeling too kindly toward old houses! You have made your home very welcoming and pleasant.

Kobesam & bbocking - So neat to have fellow Cdn's to say hello too! My house is only 30 min east of London! I was worried my bf wouldn't like living outside the city (about 30 min to London and 30 min to KW), but he's adapted so well it's like he's always been a village local lol!

mbd07 - I agree! After this house, I think we'll always stick to the older homes if we can. They come with work, but you can't beat the history, character, and yards of the older places. My dream next time is an old stone schoolhouse on 5 acres so I can have a pony! We almost did buy a schoolhouse before the one we have now, but the water tests failed. :( I'd love to see any slide show you put together too!

twelvegates - Awww...your comments were really nice. We had a custom built new home last time that was beautiful, but was a "show home" so to speak. When my sister visited she even said that; "It's nice, but who lives here." My approach with this place was to do the opposite so it felt like a home and comfortable yet unique. So I'm very happy that that is what comes out in the pictures. That was a house, this is a home. There is a bit more to the horse items I have - much of it I've collected over the years and can now display it. We went to the Windfields auction a few years ago in Oshawa, ON and got a lot of the items you see there. The iconic farm closed so I had to have memories of it. Others, like the antique bits I've got at auctions around here, the pictures on the walls are mostly Christmas presents; one from an artist popular in BC that my sister gave me, a really cool canvas one my bf got me, and a framed pic of Zenyatta from my Mom. Then, add in the fact that I'm a rider and there is the rest of the theme. LOVE them! My bf is very accommodating to let me put horse in each room of our house lol!

marjie1059 - I know right!? I fell in love with the flagstone walkway when I saw it especially when it was exactly what I'd wanted to do at my previous house. We knew it wasn't a long term house so we didn't and then lo and behold! Something we didn't have to do here. Sweet. :) The basement is actually pretty decent compared to a lot of the older homes we saw. My 6'2" bf can walk upright for the most part - just has to look out for the floor supports. It's a stone foundation with a concrete floor. Good for storage and litter boxes. Nothing we'd ever want to finish that's for sure. I have a standing agreement with the bugs in my house...I understand that it's going to happen with such an old house so as long as they stay no further up than the first landing, we're good. They come up any higher and that's grounds for being flushed lol! The one unique thing about the basement is that the old cistern is still there. I'd love to see pictures of your home if you have any especially since we were both built the same year. How cool!

L Star Murals - Thanks for the compliment on the wall colours! I spent a good deal of time trying to plan them out and make them cohesive. It was exciting to do b/c this house isn't open concept so different colours could be used unlike my other house. That one was very open concept with 18 ft ceilings in the main room so not only hard to paint, but all the same walls flowed into different rooms. We had latte and then a few different shades, but here I can do green, blue, chocolate, cream and whatever else I want! For the library, I'm thinking something like van duesen blue by BM and I really like Creek Bend colour by Behr...just not sure where yet. :)

Anne Dee - You'd think so, eh? But, no...I think I'm adopted b/c I'm the only horse crazy person in my family. The rest like them, but have other interests. But, they always entertain me when I go on and on and on and then on some more about them or my ride that day.

I really enjoyed looking thru all your pictures. We also did a total renovation and just finished our last room (guest bathroom) which I posted on Houzz. It is a lot of work, but so worth the final product. Now on to the outside, hope it turns out as nice as yours did :)

I absolutely LOVE that u shared this! My husband and I are closing on our very first home on Aug 1st, and this got me so excited to make it our own by making changes to it. How wonderful it must feel to live in a home that you've "created" and shared with the one you love! I found your post to be so inspiring and a blessing. Thank you for sharing! About the wooden container that you are trying to grow flowers in- I just saw a container like yours( in the same position)with river rocks spilling out of it. Also impatience are a great flower for a shady area.

Yeah, I didn't get a lot of sleep when I painted the kitchen that's for sure and we often have to spend a weekend doing mtce outside, to keep it up, but all part of owning a home I guess. :) Hmmm...river rocks...that's interesting! I never thought of anything other than flowers. I'll ponder that! I did impatiens the first year and they all died. I might have got the wrong kind though. I think the problem is that roots can take hold and the soil gets eroded by any rain so that doesn't make for good conditions. I'm really leaning towards something non-flower now. Intriguing!

Aww, thanks Mary! I'd love to see pics of yours too if you have any - congrats on making it thru every room! To be fair, the outside was already there when we moved in - it just needed a lot of work to get it back to nice. If I'd had to actually shape the gardens and start them....I'd just have grass still lol! But since they were started, I feel an obligation to keeping them up. I def now see why too much landscaping can actually make a house not sell.
