Usually arround 5C"(41F) night temp is indoor time for cacti for me- and it will be pretty soon.

But so far its been a really hot really dry sempteber in the balkans.

Here’s my crazy desert, 90s duri days and 50s at nights, my plants are not sure if it’s dormant time or blooming time. They are dropping leaves and setting up buds at the same time. I don’t even know when to bring them in and how to water them. Survival of the fittest.

Here in Seattle it's pretty standard 50s at night 70s during the day. Things may change if a squall comes through.

Very hot and humid today - just over 80*; but dropping down to low 40ties overnight. Looks like Summer is over for now - next 2 weeks are supposed to be in mid 50ties to low 60ties daytime, and only low-mid 40ties most nights.

Some of you are experiencing a pretty long thermometer with big differences between the highs and lows. In my opinion we are having some of the nicest weather right now. The best we’ve had all Summer. Very pleasant temperatures, low humidity. I can actually take a walk during my lunch break without frying and coming back feeling all sticky and gross. It’s even cooled off enough to be able to sleep at night. If only the days were longer.

Today the high was in the 80's. When I got up this morning, the temp was 36. I moved my adeniums in three weeks ago. :-(

Dain, sounds like your at what 5 or 6 thousand? But your dry aren't you? Did you ever post your set up and plants in pics ?

6500 feet in elevation. Days are hot because of how south I am. Nights are cold because of the elevation. I'm currently in an apartment, but if I buy a house, I'll definitely put a greenhouse in the back yard to lengthen my growing season!

Mine do not come in until night time temps steadily stay in the 40's and for a long period of time.

It was summer last week now fall this week. Temps in the 60's nights 40's for a few days..I defy all odds by leaving them out so that they dry out on my hot flat roof when the sun is out and leave the dry until it either rains again or the sun is out again. It's a must in order for them to do ok. I refuse to bring them in, in September or water them when I know it's going to be cloudy. on cool days when they will not dry out in time for cold nights. .. May the strongest survie.

Now, that's chilly!

Hot to cold. Odd weather early

High today for me was 69F! WAAAAHHHHH!!!!!

Highs today was 51 and 40's tonight, yuk!! 90's last week and beach weather. It's as if someone turned the switch off. Everything I grow is still outside and a few on the porch. The cold weather moved in faster than a mouse can run from a cat! 70's tomorrow and 80 on Wednesday that back down to the 40's and 60's Bi polar weather and I don't want to bring my plants in just yet. Ugh, what to do?

We had high 80s and some of the local places are claiming high 30s in the morning (!), but we're now in town, so probably mid 40s. Typically, October is one of the nicest months here in No CA, especially at the coast. The fog goes away!

We usually end up getting rain the last week of October (right when hubby starts his pumpkin carving gigs!)

We have the windows open very often now and my wife says to 'store up the cold for what hot days we have left'.

I love it when it dips to 15C at night. =)

It's still warm enough here in Canada for tornadoes. I just found out three of them touched down in the east of our province causing terrible damage! I hope no one lost their life!

Recent winds played with my plants. I was away and came back late Fri to this mess:

Even the short water hose was blown here from somewhere...this teaches me to check weather for days while away and take some precautions!!! Needles to say, many broken plants. They all got unplanned repotting. And I hope they survive. Still, I can't complain - tornadoes in Quebec were much worse!

Rina, my God, I never heard of weather like that up there. Is that common? I feel so bad. Is all the white perlite, pumice or sand? Seems the wind did quite a job. I know in your trusted care, they will be back on their feet before you know it. I am so sorry about this for you Rina. Please let us see them all back together again will you? Prayers to you my friend)

Matt, I am glad they did not hit you. I find that kind of strange for this late in the season. 80 hear tomorrow after a day in the 40's here. It's just crazy. So unpredictable that our poor plants have to be protected from everything these days.

Thank you. I try to see some benefit in it - many plants got new mix, and some were due for bigger pots anyway :)

Tornadoes are not so common around here, and where it happened few days ago, it is quite a distance from my location (hundreds of miles). But we got some stronger than usual winds, and it was wind gusts that caused that disaster. I had about 30 plants on the table that got overturned. Lower racks, like the black one visible in the photo, didn't get overturned Just a freaky situation...that table was more exposed, not protected by anything that could have help in breaking the wind.

I lost lots of mix too, as it fell thru the holes of the plastic 'flooring'. The white stuff you see is chicken grit and perlite - I use those 2 ingredients in 1:1 ratio and add small amount of turface (approx. 10-15%). No sand at all. Matt is located south of me, closer to Toronto IIRC.

What a bummer Rina! It's happened to me a few times in the past. =/

Hopefully your flooring helped absorb some of the impact and nothing was damaged too much.

Aww Rina, Hope nothing was too "broken" yes as mike said let's see em all fixed up :) I know we got the light end of it and were lucky.. I'm surprised mine were all ok. We've had the remnants of two hurricanes and now wind storm and a hot hot summer. What a year it's turned out to be!

Matt, no problem. Sorry you had to go through that! I never thought those things happen up there. When I think Canada I think way up north but then come to think of it. some of Canada is actually warmer than I am and further south than me. Gee, come to think of it, I really live far up north, too north for my liking. Today it's so warm that the inside of my house is cold. I walked outside and the heat hit me in the face. It warmed up so fast, all my windows are foggy. 70% dew point. A front will go through tonight with thunder and be back into the 60's tomorrow 40's by night. Just like a roller coaster and I am not sure how much longer my plants can take it. I just dread bringing them inside because it's so much easier to water and grow them outside. Have you brought all yours in yet? Or a certain few? Do you have anything special you like? Do you like jades? Hoya?

Hopefully you are right Matt. It seems like the warm wants to come back again come Saturday and then next week. Then cold too. Crazy. It was the hottest year too. Humid for sure!

Rina, you are so right! lol I know I have a few that need re potting and it would take a freak of nature to help me do it for sure. I just don't have the motivation to do much this year and can not figure why. But that sounds like a great mix. Come to speak of it, I need to pick up some chicken grit since that is the only thing I am missing. Wow, one thing I know is that your plants must love the free draining mix you use. There is proof of it in you use)

Still a bummer for broken plants and pots. Maybe you are able to root some? They look so beautiful even on the ground like that in a funny sort of way. Just beautiful work Rina.

Well, I'm WAY farther south than you, but it's 43 this morning and predicted 32 for Tuesday...so I guess this weekend, plants have to come in (I hate it).

85 here on Weds., 49 @ night, 56 today/41 & tomorrow, 52/36!!!! I am running the "end of gardening season relay race"! I don't think my unlawfully wedded husband understands! He just says he never sees me anymore after work! Trying to haul in plants, figure out what goes where, mulching & moving some outdoor plants, keep my tropicals watered, make extra gritty & 511 to keep on hand (for when winter depression causes a plant-buying spree); repot some that grew so much over summer they need it or will suffer badly; get more mums in the ground, etc. alot of these things I don't like to do when it's hot "August" weather but lately our window here for true "fall weather" (like we used to have, in the old days-LOL- & I'm only 43!!!) is slim to none. It goes from 85 to 50 with no in between! I am pushing it by leaving them out in 41 overbite temps, but like everyone else, dislike very much bringing them back inside.

Rina so sorry to see what happened to your plants. Must have been heartbreaking to come home to! I hope you can save them.

I just brought 27 plants indoors for their long winter's nap. The weather is certainly crazy in NE North America - we were at 80F + yesterday and had air conditioning on, tonight the highs are expected to be 42F and it's been chilly all day. I shoved all my plants under the porch overhang as close to the house as possible to avoid the leftover rain and wind from Michael yesterday, still had a few knocked over. I feel for you Rina, hope you were able to salvage and repair.

Houston's first "cold front" is coming up. The weather is going to be pretty nice minus the cloudiness and rain. No more 90's yay!

Rina, I'm so sorry for your mess--so glad you put it into prospective--what else can we do when disaster strikes?

We usually start getting frosts in September, but they held out until this past week. I'm glad I brought in some of my jades, but I think the rest will be toast. I'm going out a little later today to check. And I know I didn't even get one pumpkin this year.

I'm glad that most of my cacti can tolerate a little frost and the Echinopsis and Trichocereus can take a little more. But the migration will start today/tomorrow and finish up next week. And I have to hunt down my turtle. They all go out and come back in at the same time.

Ok-, 37 F last night & the c&s stayed out! Didnt have time to bring them in & by the time I did have time, it was late & I was exhausted! A quick glance & everything seems to have survived...I know most are rated to 32F but I do believe the covered screen porch still holds a little more heat than true "outside" cold - like a little microclimate- even if only by a few degrees. Hauling them all in tomorrow. Sad.
