7 years agoLovely kitchen. It's a very pleasant and mild design (very good thing - you won't get tired of it and there's nothing about it that will be "dated" in six months). It also leaves you lots of options for neat tiling/backsplash/fireplace surround.
One aspect of design history you could tap into for indirect inspiration is Victorian fireplaces. Many fireplaces from this era had really exquisite tile surrounds:
The surrounds and hearths came in all sorts of designs and colors (we have four fireplaces in our Victorian house and they all have different tile).
The reason I say indirect inspiration is because you'd want a contemporary/more modern take on this to match your interior - clean lines, modern tile designs, etc. Having a surround of interesting decorative tile on the fireplace surround and tying the rooms together by using them as accents in the backsplash would be very nice, I think.

PRO7 years agoYou can do so many things since your kitchen has a blank slate. You could go for simple subway tile in a glossy white, or a grey, even blue. You could do a herringbone design or arabesque tile. You could even go with glass tiles. There are a lot of options out there for you.
