Also have question for those that grow in pots. Number of my hosta filled pots with roots very well, utilizing space they were given. Am not sure how big I need to upgrade pots for next year...

lindalana, when I pot up I wash all the old compost off and then choose my pot according to the roots it has. I allow about an inch of growing space all around them. Enough room to stretch, not so much they are lost in the pot.

I always leave this till spring as they won't grow anymore during the winter so being pot bound is not a problem.

This fall I really want to get the gardens cleaned up so I can work on other things in spring. I'm weeding, weeding, weeding, and still have soilpep (mulch/compost mix) to put on top. I spent almost three hours in one bed today. ....Three hours, I must be slow, lol.

No frost so haven't been cutting things down yet, but it will come soon enough. I'll let the hosta leaves stay where they die back until spring. That's been part of my usual fall laziness that works out well. But I really want other things cleaned up, partly so my spring bulbs will photograph better.

I'm not dealing with potting up yet but I have cannas, EEs, geraniums that I'll get to. Some day I want to try mini hostas in pots again so I read the potting threads to see how others are overwintering their hostas.

I’m doing leisurely fall clean up. Weeding as I feel like it, popping some new hostas in the ground, cleaning up the potting bench, etc.

This is a wind down time for me so I look at everything as “If I want to do it I shall and if my back hurts.... I won’t“ :)

I've been planting some plants that need to go into the ground. I have a lot of pots---and many are small---so I am trying to figure out where I am going to bury them into the ground after frost. The remaining pots will go into the garage and into our north facing window well. I am trying to find a place to store media and supplies. Last year I had some rice hulls that I put away in a Rubbermaid storage unit. Mice got into it and made a mess. So I need to find some decent airtight storage bins. I still have some pine bark lying around. The chunks are too big so I am sifting it to get rid of the larger pieces. I am trying out my mulcher to reduce their size also. I want to have some media ready in the early spring in case we have some nice weather. I find the nurseries don't usually have their stock yet when I want to get going. In addition, I am trying to remember to apply slug bait! Ammonia spraying is on the to-do list too!

Main problem is how to ID them in the spring.

Looking good lindalana! I have planted inground some minis and small hostas. The rest of the small ones I will bury with pot. I just have to figure out where!

I see you have done some labelling. Perhaps several pictures with names of the hosta would help identify the hostas in the spring?

I guess Mother Nature had a different plan for me....

The only things destroyed were a trellis and four planters.

I’m hoping the grape and star jasmine that were on the trellis will bounce back fine.

I had a kind of infirmary set up that was smooshed but I think all the plants in it were so small that they will be fine also.

We worked on it pretty much all day Saturday and then ached on Sunday :(

The firewood will be nice but it sure makes me nervous for the other trees. We are basically surrounded by big leaf maples and most are multi trunked so we will see how the season goes.

I love my trees but they are a lot more work than most people think!

Wow, that is a list of clean up. Was that mossy trunk tree? As in it was dead for while? Yes, tree upkeep is expensive

doesn't sound too bad..you don't have to tell me about trees being a lot of work..here's my house (surrounded by trees)..

lindalana- no tree is still alive, I had an arborist come out yesterday to make sure it’s not dying. He said it’s just how it goes with multi trunkEd biggies and he cabled the remaining trunks together for me. Hopefully we’re good for awhile.

Today I‘m gonna go out and do more of the “messy“ clean up, plus mulch some leaves and make sure all my hostas are correctly marked.
