I just replaced a bar pull like the first picture on a between the studs laundry cabinet door.

I lifted a loaded laundry basket that was sitting on the floor and jammed the back of my wrist into the end of the pull. (Pull was mounted vertically.) Broke the skin in a big circle, left a nasty bruise and didn't feel so good when I did it.

Replaced with a curved Hafele arched pull that looks like it would be impossible to wound myself on.

HI -- That first handle will drive you crazy .... it catches on everything . Look at Emtek.com , for great quality hardware .

I have the pulls from Lee Valley that look like the first one and I have had them in 2 houses and have never had a problem with them hooking on my clothers they sit behing the overhang of your couter and if you go vertical with long ones it never is an issue. Lee Valley has 100s of styles of pulls in many finishes.

I prefer the 2nd pull for the reasons other mentioned above, and also slab doors. It’s a personal decision, but in the last house, all the lint, etc., seemed like it constantly collected in the crevices of the shaker doors in the laundry room. I have slab doors and square, closed-end pulls everywhere in the new house.
