I don’t know where to start. Im terrible at decorating.

#1 - take down the valances

#2 - buy a TV for that recess

#3 - buy a 3-seat sofa and two swivel chairs

Good advice. Leave up the shades if they are separate from the valance. Do you have any furniture you already own that you want to incorporate? How many people will typically be sitting in the room?

We would start by taking down the valances, then replacing the carpet with hardwood if that's in the budget. Then we would get some furniture, unless you already have some for the room. Here are some ideas on how to decorate the room:
