I would remove that sliding shower door, the valance and replace with a shower curtain. Keeping in mind the aqua tile and tub, consider painting the walls a lighter tone of the aqua so it will have the darker border of the wall tile.

I like the color suggestions but I would use a shower curtain that has more of a retro vibe or something simple like a blue and white stripe.

Choose stainless steel hardware to attach to the walls to hold your shower curtain rod.

Until you find the perfect shower curtain, begin with a thick clear shower curtain liner that is mildew resistant. The clear curtain liner will let the natural light into the room.

Choose a lighter shade of the blue than the tile and tub for your walls.

With frosted glass, you don't actually need any window treatment for the bathroom window.

I like Judy G's shower curtain suggestion. A pretty patterned shower curtain would draw the eye away from the tile border or the blue tub.

I had my tub spray coated - you can have that blue tub changed to white. I found it to be reasonably priced and is way easier than tearing the bathroom apart.

I've also seen blogs where people paint their tile and their linoleum. I think your baby blue might be a candidate for that.

Love the tub color. A bit of black in the shower curtain pattern, and some black in accessories (e.g. picture frame) might give it a bit of a pop.

I've removed one of those shower doors and, although it's a bit tedious scraping off the sealer/caulking, it's not difficult. It's just screwed into the wall.

Once upon a time, I had a blue tub kind of like yours. Painting the walls a light blue, like JudyG suggested, made the blue Tub stand out less. It was nice. Her advice is good.

Removing the shower doors will leave holes in the tile and probably a mark on the tub. It might not be worth it. You might have to settle for some very cool towels on the towel bar. Overall, it looks very clean and usable.

(I think I have that tub in pink. It is an excellent tub! You might want to test for lead if you are putting small kids in that are the age that drink bathwater.)

In my experience it did leave holes in the tile which we caulked. They weren't that noticeable. There wasn't a mark on the tub from the shower doors.

I love your white and blue tile! The blue reminds me of wedgewood blue. I second the idea of some black in the pattern of towels or shower curtain. Also white.

I believe I have removed three different glass and chrome door sets over tubs and when you have white tile, the little holes from the screws will fill nicely with white caulk and be unnoticeable. I have never had scratches in the finish of the tub enamel, just some gray lines from contact with the metal that mostly went away with Barkeeper's Friend. I have also had this tub before and the width of the edge for sitting and the inside size is nice for bathing. Do not refinish the surface. I read in this forum that the coatings that can be done on site are just glorified paint and will peel eventually.

You have room to hang a shower curtain outside of the shower doors just for cosmetic purposes.

I would use a frameless shower enclosure. That would open things up and make it feel a lot roomier and let the nice tile work be the focus.

No shower curtain for the reasons above. Will clutter things up. And so close to the toilet, if there are men in the house, you know what will happen to a shower curtain. Nasty.

And remove the towel contraption over the toilet.

What do you all think of wallpaper? There's a lot of tile in the bathroom and not much wall so I could do wallpaper. Maybe something black and white?

I know you asked for some paint colors but I couldn't help advising on a few other items to help freshen up the space. :) Yes, change the paint.. I would probably recommend against a blue toned paint because of the bathtub and maybe a dove white. Definitely remove the shower doors as, believe or not, that is what is making this space look more outdated. I love the shower curtain ideas as described above. Change the shower and faucet fixtures as well as the sink faucet fixtures to match. This will really help the pace look new and fresh. To bring everything together, I would remove the shelving above the toilet and add a piece of art to incorporate everything. Post some after pictures :)

JudyG - great! What type of wallpaper would you recommend for this space? A particular type of pattern?

At nearly 60 years old, I have never learned what men do to a shower curtain to make it nasty. Maybe I have been hanging shower curtains with the wrong (right?) men?

I use a polyester cloth shower curtain. It's a dark color so when I see soap/shampoo accumulation on the hem I wash it in the washing machine. It comes out like new. It's waterproof so it doesn't need a liner.
