These are from a friends place near the Daintree, originally thought it was a Sarcochilus before it flowered. I got the name from the wet tropics rainforest orchids index. The seem to have a common name even for some of the most obscure species. I suspect they make up the names as they go along. Still, "...a rose by any other name....".

Nice and danty.

Beautiful!

Today I noticed seed pods forming on the first ones to flower. A number of days back I saw some insects flying nearby but they disappeared too quickly to be able to photograph them. Suspected they were interested in the flowers but didn't think we'd have suitable pollinators, the orchids aren't local here. May have jumped to conclusions too quickly. The pods should mature during the wet season so if all else works out okay there might be a few 'babies' showing up later. One can always hope.

That is incredible! I haven’t actually ever seen an orchid make seed pods (I obviously don’t have the climate). Fingers crossed!!!

Actually, it's not so much a case of climate but more so having the right pollinator. Most orchids have evolved relationships with specific pollinators (mainly insects) that have the right form/shape and particular behaviour to carry out successful pollination. 99.9% of insects can't do it for the particular species of orchid. If the right insect isn't there then no pollination, no seed. But it appears the right pollinator happens to be here, or else a another local insect coincidentally happens to fit the idiosynchracies of this orchid.

Of course, having the right pollinator is only part of the story. If you get viable seed usually you need the right fungus to help it germinate and then assist the seedling to grow. So there's still a few 'hurdles' before being able to claim success.
