Stuck on the cloud....

Hi Everyone!

So we have been looking to get a sofa for our family room. Our style is a little bit more french country with a modern twist. But we came across the cloud sectional pit sofa at Z gallerie and my husband hasn't been able to stop talking about this sofa. Im not crazy about the style of it but i do have to admit this is probably one of the most comfortable sofas Ive ever sat on.

So (if we end up getting this) how do we design the room to give it a more of a traditional feel with such a contemporary sofa??

Can that middle piece be moved out for guests or elderly parents? Who wants to climb on a sofa? Might be better suited for the family movie room.

It would encourage guest to stay longer because they can't get out/off. LOL

I don't understand how that is a comfortable sofa unless you are lying down - so it is essentially a sofa made for two people.

What is it that makes it comfortable for you. If you want to lounge on a sofa, get two sofas so each person can lounge. Or invest in lounge chairs - they make some very modern looking ones that don't resemble Lazy Boy dad chairs.

Sofas themselves can differ greatly in terms of comfort depending on the construction and the dimensions.

So forgot to mention, this is a modular piece, so you can move it around in all different configurations so it doesn't have to be in this 'bed" configuration.

I think you will regret it if you buy this.

I looked at the Cloud recently because it came in white leather (had been crushing on the Stella and still am). "Cloud" sounded soooooo comfy + leather, how could it be bad? Lounging I can see how it would be great (and reviews reflect this). For us, though, SITTING was not that comfortable because of the sloped design, essentially a slouch position. But wait! That wasn't what you asked! In isolation (and in Z Gallerie) it looks super modern, but it really seems rather neutral to me. If your other design elements (floors, rugs, art, window treatments) are more traditional or transitional, I don't think it will clash. Perhaps you or someone here could photoshop it into your living room so you could see how it might work with your other pieces?

That slouched sitting position looks very uncomfortable. Also, no armrests.

When you test a chair or sofa, don't just sit down and think "ooh comfy". Bring a newspaper or magazine and sit in it for 20 minutes. Then decide.

What are the dimensions of the room it would go in? I see the dimensions of 'it' are 114''W x 75''D x 35''H . Do you have pics of the room that you can post here?

I see on the site that one person who bought it shows it like this, which may be much better for most than it all together like above.

What is your family make-up? ie: how many people and are there kids and other people?

Someday I'm going to count all the Design Dilemmas that have to do with the problems of designing around humongous couches. Today, go on your local Craigslist and do a search for "sectional" and you will see couches people are practically giving away because they're moving to a smaller place and it won't fit, it hogs the current room spacially and visually, etc.

Here's something else to keep in mind: usually just two guests will sit on a couch no matter how big it is so that they wind up in a row conversationally sideways. What works much better is a comfortable couch that has reasonable lines, arms, etc. and two very comfortable chairs in a complementary but not the same matchy, matchy fabric. People can face each other talking around the coffee table. If the chairs aren't too heavy they can be turned around to face TV or put on swivels--all of this usually cheaper than a leather manatee.

I'd say he's hinting for a man cave. Can you convert the garage for him and this monster? I assume he'll want a huge TV too! Can't blame the guy, but don't fall for putting it in a room where you plan to entertain guests with conversation and drinks.

If you and your family routinely prefer slouching instead of sitting, then go for this. This is probably the best slouching sofa around. Even without the center piece, you can't really sit on that couch. The perimeter pieces are slouch producing pieces.

Sorry, that sofa will not fit in a "French traditional room" Hubby needs to get over it. That is basically a bed in couch clothing.

I have a bad back. No way I could or would sit on (in?) that couch.

with a bunch of pillows and blankets - it'd be fun for lounging all day. But I'm pretty sure it's bigger than my entire living room - so i could never make it work :-(

This looks like a trendy piece of furniture that will be "in" for a year or two and then "out" for the rest of your life. My back hurts just looking at it, and too bad, so sad for anyone with shorter legs. It looks like a problem that no one should have to deal with.

I love it ... and I hate it. In equal parts.
