Vladimir, Interesting link, thank you. However it didn't really answer the question of how large a un-grafted Ponderosa will get. This being grown in a container, of course. My original plant is grafted on flying dragon root stock and is pretty dwarf. And I've had it a number of years. So I really wanted to know how large it would potentially grow if grown on its own roots.

All I can say is that it would be considerably smaller than a tree grown on its own roots. Sorry I could not give a more definite answer.

The Ponderosa is normally quite a lot larger than one grown on FD; I would expect it to get to be near standard... of course limited by the container it is in.

If your flying dragon rootstock throws out suckers one day, you can let it grow and cut it off to root as a cutting. Then you’d have a flying dragon rootstock to graft your ponderosa cutting onto!

So far it has never even tried to send up suckers. But I had to prune a limb to get it in the green house, so I thought "what the heck, try to root it", I just didn't know how large a plant they usually make, since mine has stayed small. Thank you all for the replies.

I have a 10 yr old Buddha's Hand grafted on Flying Dragon. It would be 15ft easy if I didn't cut it back Which I do once a year to keep it around 8-10 ft. One year a storm knocked a large branch on the ground and it fell behind some other plants and rooted in a couple places so I cut them and made new trees. The own root one I kept, is now almost as large as the mother plant. Grapefruit is probably the same way.

Mine is about 4 1/2 to 5 feet tall, and about 6-7 years old. I get huge fruit each year, but this is the first time I've tried to root a piece. This is the first time I've even had to prune it.

I was looking at my Ponderosa today. It has 1 measley lemon.... it has another branch with small flower which will bloom in a couple of weeks... It did put on lots of new leaves... A couple are actually bigger than my hand. This tree is about 2-3'. I hear Ponderosa naturally grow to be big tree buts of course, in the climate we live and in a pot will drastically limit it's growth (Speed and max growth). I wouldn't be too worried about starting a cutting, growing in a pot will keep it at the same size as other potted citrus. Obviously a bigger pot and a better climate will increase it's size accordingly.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Dave. I am going to try to root it, although I might not have much success, as my cat knocked it off the windowsill and I had to re-pot it!

Well, other than the "can I do this" aspect, I imagine I will gift it to a friend that is wanting one, since I REALLY don't want two Ponderosa's. Lol!

My citrus collection is pretty much complete, unless I can find red or yellow finger lime trees. And my greenhouse is maxed out!

It just seemed a shame to throw away the cutting, when I might be able to root it. And my friend has been wanting one. I just wasn't sure how large it would get for him, since the only experience I have had with them, is my extremely dwarf one. Which, right now is loaded with fruit!
