cucurbit life span

last modified: 8 years ago

It has become especially obvious to me this year that cucurbits (melons, cukes, etc.) have a very finite life span. My crops produced like crazy through spring and intense summer heat. After that summer heat subsided, I figured it would give them a second wind, as in, another springtime! But no, they all just croaked. On doing some reading about it, I realize that this is an accepted fact. The lesson here, I guess, is to stagger their planting a bit. I have a couple of months of growing season left, but no more cukes or melons. It'll be a month or two before I put in beets. Now, my squash all went in in July, so they are all thriving.

Are there any strategies to extend the growing season for these plants? Obviously, letting any of the fruit go to seed is not in the interest of extended growing season. That's easy to do with cukes, but very hard to do with melons or squash which are ripe when they've gone completely to seed.
