You can do it two ways: make boxes from sheets of plywood and trim them out; the only exposed part of the plywood is the recessed panels. Alternative is to build face frames and add individual recessed panels from the back. This requires some kind of joinery skills and gear. The FF's can be made mortice & tenon, wood splines (Biscuits or Dominoes) or glued/screwed (Kreg jig).

There are several different skill sets for the term carpenter. A person who mostly does framing(building houses) often does not have the knowledge or skills to make something like that fireplace. A finish carpenter is more likely to be able to make that. To find folks like that, ask lumberyards(not home improvement stores) or woodworking supply stores.
