Kitchen Cabinets

Please help me. I am getting ready to remod el my kitche. shoping for cabinets has made this project very stressful. I want to get good quality American made cabinets at a decent price. But even American made cabinets like Hanssem, Wellborn have mixed reviews. A cabinet dealer quoted me $6500 for Hanssem which are plywood, and are framed with crowns. Is this a good deal? I have gotten quotes as high as $8,000 for Hanssem. I also got a quote for Designer’s Choice and Wellborn. Has anyone used any of these brands and what are your thoughts

Sorry I repeated one pic twice

This is the design I’m looking for

I also got an estimate for fieldstone for almost $10,000, mid continent $9,000 and echelon $7,000

    That's tight.

The frig is not put next to a wall so you can open the door wide enough to get drawers out.

A pantry cabinet is tough to use if the shelves are more than 11-12" deep. You can add bins on the door and reduce shelf depth when you open the door..

In your layout I'd consider no wall ovens to get more counter. A good induction range would be enough. Like a Bosch 800 or Benchmark or Frigidaire.

I need a comment regarding cabinets

I’m not putting a pantry next to the fridge. The pantry is gonna be on the opposite wall separating the kitchen from the dining room. Thank you

Move up the food chain if you want quality.

I’m working with a certain budget. Even if I move up the food chain, I still get mixed reviews about the cabinets

Hanssem is a good choice for American made. It’s well priced, semi custom and you can do a lot with it. My gc offered us a hanssem kitchen as part of our house purchase. Although I personally chose an upgrade, I’ve seen the hanssem kitchens installed in other homes he’s built and they really look nice

If you don’t mind, would you tell me what brand you ended up choosing and approximately how much you paid. thank you

You’d be looking at about 18K in any true mid grade quality brand. The fact that you are getting quotes at less than half that price ought to tell you the quality that you are looking at. Something has to give. Your budget, or the standards for acceptable quality. Or the time frame you do this in. Save more money and do it right.

If you plan on having a fridge 1 door that opens to the left as you currently have, you'll be ok. However, if you ever get a 2 door or want it to open the other direction, it will not work.

Highly recommend seeing the cabinets considered, so you can touch & see the quality.

If there's no showroom to see the quality in person, order just 1 cabinet in the layout to inspect before purchasing them all at once. If you like it, great buy the rest. If you don't like it, you saved yourself a huge expensive headache. Repeat until you find the cabinet that passes your preferences.

^ That link is misleading and inaccurate for a lot of things, even though it is accurate for Hanssem. Similar to Consumer Reports giving the exact same item with different labels, different ratings. That does the same thing. No one with true industry knowledge gives that much credence. Plus, he touts the complete fiction of frameless being inferior, and cheepchinesecrapola being decent. That’s BS marketing to sell the cheepchinesecrapola that sells, and running down quality competitors that just happen to offer frameless.

3/8” junk plywood sides, plastic corner bracing, hot glue soley used for panel joinery, no natural cherry offered, toners used to disguise poor wood quality choice, 1/2 shelves in bases, poor quality knockoff hardware, poor sanding, veneered raised paneled doors, limited size drawer based. 75 pound rating for drawers, 1-2 white paint choices, limited or no depth modifications, and no 33” or 39”H sizes is just some of the metrics to look at. There are more. But the appearance of quality to the uneducated is not the same thing as actual quality to the educated.

Thank you I saw that list and the 2018 one too

Nice cabinets are expensive. The MOST expensive part of the kitchen remodel. Have you checked out Fabuwood? More expensive than your quotes, but a lot of bang for your buck.

Reviews are opinions and can be valuable as input, not necessarily for making final decisions. I have Bremtown cabinets and are very happy with them. The Mainline list shows Bremtown as poor value for the money. That wasn't important to me as I wanted quality. Remember that evereyone has an opinion. How you interpret their opinion is what's important.

fuzzy wyzzy you are absolutely right. Plus they rated the ones they sell higher than the other cabinets

Suzyq53 I did. They’re not more expensive but the fact they are made in China just turns me off

Save more money and do the project right. Cabinets are the largest single expenditure on a kitchen redo, but they are only 30-40% of the overall total when using paid contractor labor.

The right KD and GC for the design and labor portion are as important as your cabinet choice. And you have obviously not found any KD worth working with if those are the results. It’s not even minimally well designed. Plus. Junk cabinets.

I hear you on that. The only to advantage to Chinese is the price. I'm in SoCal investment rentals and that's all I use. They look nice and hold up well. With my discount they are about one third the cost of Kraftmade or similar.

Based on the pictures of your kitchen you posted, your kitchen doesn't warrant spending more than about $30,000 complete for your kitchen and that includes cabinets, flooring, lighting, back splash & counter tops. Spend more than that and you will never see a return on your money.

Remember that cabinets merely hold your dishes, pots & pans, food & hold up the counters. They don't make any food.

UlisdoneFunny you should say that. I have been cooking in for the past 27 years and have had no problems, but thanks

BeverlyFLADeziner Im not even planning on spending that much. Not in my budget

A small rental kitchen I redid. All Chinese cabs and pre-fab Chinese granite. Cabs assembled on site. Plywood boxes. I removed fluorescents and installed cans and new sink. All for less than $5000. Not heirloom quality for sure but fresh and clean. The tenants love it.

My 20 year old cabinets are by Medallion and still in good shape. When I first started reading this forum, many said plywood boxes were the only way to go, but of late I have heard it admitted that a good MDF for the box was fine too. Solid wood doors for stained cabinets, but painted cabinets, even for higher end, are often MDF or MDF and wood combined.

Custom is expensive because the cabinets are made to your specifications, but if you can work with standard sizes produced in an American factory the price can go way down. Painted cabinets do need to be finished well. Chipping would be my main concern with a low priced painted cabinet. There are also extras in soft close drawers etc. I would add that a decent installer is a must. Many cabinets get damaged by poor installers. Be there for the install if possible.

A good mid grade line for that layout would be 16-24K. Look at Diamond, Kemper, Schrock, Medallion, Schuler, Yorktown, Shiloh, Kraftmaid, Merillat, Wellborn, Showplace, Decora, DuraSupreme, and local custom that only use a conversion varnish finish.

But that layout should not be anywhere close to a final. It needs redoing to work more efficiently. You need a good Kitchen Designer to fix that. That may or may not come with the supplier of the cabinets. You should post your measured layout here in the forum go get brainstorming on how to fix it.

HU-589023577 I used Hanssem (Korean Company, material from China and Europe and manufactured in the US.) in the past and I think if your budget is tight and you have to stick with it, it is an acceptable quality, you have to request plywood construction , self closing hinges as well as under-mount self closing drawers, they are semi- custom so there is room for play,as far as the layout, in general I would

Prefer more counter on L and R of the range and have the oven under a cooktop

The wall ovens are easier to reach but counter space is more useful in a small footprint

Also before finalizing get the spec for the refrigerator to make certain there will be no clearance issues, ( this is the single most common mistake when you have an inexperienced designer or cabinet sales person helping)

different quotes for the same brand are Normal some companies upcharge more than others.

as far as acrylic doors I also have used them, and the problem is that in some cases the edgeband can start to peel after a few years, I am not sure if Hanssem is correcting the problem, but is something to be aware of, they offer a 5 Year warranty, and given the budget you can expect to last you at least that long ( you get what you pay for)

    Best of luck

I skipped past the last third of the comments, so if someone's already said this, I apologize for being repetitive. Ask about the warranty. Manufacturers build their cabinets to the warranty they offer, so anyone with a 25-year warranty or a limited lifetime warranty will have quality cabinets that will hold up under normal wear and tear. Since a cabinet company makes the cabinets after you order, it's usually not practicable to get them from overseas, so most of what you'll see is American made.

You should be able to get a quality cabinet for that layout for under $10,000 unless you live in NYC or LA. In some areas, you could probably get it for $7,500. What might raise the price above that is if you pick out an unusual or unique door style, put on an expensive finish or put in functionalities like a mixer base. Find out about each products construction and materials.

You have to decide what's important: Having a good quality cabinet that looks great and lasts decades or having a brand name and a price tag you can brag about?

And Sophie, $18k is way outrageous for this, you need to dial down the rhetoric.

A small kitchen in a low priced line might come in under 15K. The OP is asking about better quality cabinets than Merillat Basics, Aristokraft, Wolf, Contractors Choice, Hanssem, or Mid Continent. Or imports. Better quality will not come at a lower price. That is an impossibility.

I got an estimate for Hanssem framed cabinets for $6500

    What does OP stand for

Opening post. Merillat Basics has a 5 year warranty and is only used for cheap spec houses. Merillat Classics has a 25 year warranty and I'd put that in my own home. Merillat Masterpiece has a limited lifetime warranty. What's important is the construction techniques like dovetailed drawers, slow close doors and drawers, I-beam vs cornerblock and an upgrade to plywood sides or all-plywood box.

Now do you really want this information or do you just like to post on Houzz? I saw on another post that you're thinking of moving, even though your in the midst of a kitchen remodel. What's the story HU?

I did a complete kitchen renovation using Wellborn cabinets about 11 years ago. We just moved out of that home last year. Overall, I was very pleased with the cabinets. Ours were a lovely cherry finish with dove-tail wood drawer boxes. The cabinets and finish held up well for our family of 6 plus dog.
