Please post a layout sketch (include the main level) with dimensions and your must haves. There are some amazing people here who will help you so much if you give them the tools to work with :)

If you do not have a separate dining room for entertaining I suggest you keep the table and chairs. Islands are not as comfortable as tables to sit at.

• Usually only 1 person in the kitchen cooking at a time but the kitchen is used a lot
• 2 adults and 2 children age 17 and 15
• Informal entertaining
• Separate dining room
• 9' ceilings
• Basement under the kitchen
• Willing to relocate appliances if necessary
• Would prefer to have a double oven and separate cook top
• Would prefer to have an island to eat at (maybe instead of the kitchen table and chairs) but if this doesn't work, it's okay.
• I would consider a counter depth refrigerator as they are neater and take up less space. ,

The layout you have is about as good as you can get with your constraints. One needs an absolute minimum 12' 9" square for an island.

Can you move your laundry room somewhere upstairs? I would think that room creates some bottlenecks and it would be nice to change it to a pantry / mudroom.

I might move the microwave over the the fridge wall to keep quick mw activity away from your clean up zone.

To change your kitchen's layout will require the help of a kitchen designer....Good Luck.

If you're not too attached to the peninsula, This is another layout that gives you more prep space between sink and range, more room for multiple people in/out, wall ovens. I added a window above the new sink location.

Putting an island where the table and chairs are now makes no sense. Not every kitchen can have an island. An island in your actual kitchen area would not seem to fit correctly and would not necessarily be an improvement unless your blowing out the whole kitchen and bay window area.
