The concept is a good one, except that you don't want to cut on quartz, as it will destroy your knives. But you could use it as a trivet, cheese board, etc.

Sink cutouts come out in a messy shape with sharp edges. Turning it into something nice would cost extra fabrication time, but it's certainly doable. The fragment would otherwise just go into the scrap pile/landfill.

Yes I had them make a couple of trivets for me and I put the rubber feet on the bottom. Love them! They are heavy though!

I would not say you are "Entitled" to it. It is wasted sqft that is included in the cost. Many cut outs get destroyed by the machines during fabrication so it may not even be possible.

You do not want to cut on quartz because it will ruin your knifes & you do not want to use it as a trivet because quartz cannot take heat well.

Most of the time that piece isn't one piece. It's damaged during the fabrication process. If you want a cutting board, there is usually a charge to fabricate it, just like fabricating the counters. A 60 lb hunk of rock is a poor choice for s sink cover or a cutting board.

I don't know about quartz, but I did this with my granite counters. I have one on felt pads underneath my Kitchenaid mixer, to pull it out for us, and another for cheese. You have paid for the granite--my guy charged me a small fee to finish the granite. I thought it was totally worth it. How often are you going to find matching pieces to your counter?

Agree with others that a quartz "cutting board" will destroy your knives. Plus the sound of the knife hitting the quartz will go right through you (shivers).

So many nice cutting boards out there. You don't need to MacGyver a cutting board from quartz.

Cambria sends you a cheese board after installation from your slab, measures about 14x18, have not used it in 2 years, like others have said, not a good cutting board surface.

The sink cut out is actually destroyed in the process more times then not. Some quartz companies give you 'cheese boards' from other cuts of the slab but typically never from the actual sink area itself.

It’s interesting bc I put all my hot pans on it and it doesn’t get wrecked (from the heat). Figured better to chance it on a trivet than my quartz counters, but now I’m wondering if quartz CAN really tolerate more heat than we think...(by the way I happened to have enough “waste” to do a laundry table and a couple of trivets, my contractor asked what I’d like to do with the overage also that’s what I decided)

Use it as a trivet - fine. But certainly do NOT use it as a cutting board!! As stated up above - it will quickly dull your knives!
