Stumped on Curtains

My sister and I are roommates. She is a nurse and works overnights. She recently bought black out curtains for her room since she’s sleeping during the day 3-4 days a week. I decorate the apartment and she typically doesn’t care what changes I make. I’ve decorated the whole room and picked out the furniture. I understand the curtains are necessary but they are very ugly. I’m going to hem them. I’m thinking floor length or should I do them sill length since the windows are so small?
I want to put cute curtains over top and buy one long rod that matches the rest of the rods in my apartment. But the window butts right up to the sloping wall. We live in a third floor attic apartment but oddly enough this is the only room that has such short ceilings. Should I just put the rod up anyway? And at what height? Attached is a picture of the previous window coverings.

Ignore her little Polaroid light strand. I’ve come up with a cute way to hang those strands. (Attached) We both hunt so that is her first buck. It at least goes with her nature decor.

Yes they are. She has hers turned down pretty low. I don’t think the curtain being over it is an issue if that’s what you’re asking.

Theyre like big sacks! Her getting a good days sleep is worth it though. It’s tough working 7PM-7AM

is this your room or just hers? i'm confused.

if the space with the black out curtains is her bedroom, and it has a door,.... hem her curtains so they are tidy and not collecting dust bunnies, below the sill would look proportional. to the sill would look better but i think you'd end up with light leaks.

close the door. done and dusted.

oh wait, does she have a radiator under there? drape tucked behind the radiator or you are just heating the great outdoors.

And there are the snotty comments this app is known for. I don’t know why I even bother. If anyone actually has advice and not unwanted opinions I’d appreciate it.

Thank you for the advise on length. youre probably correct that it would compromise some of the light blocking so I’ll stick with floor length.

We like leaving our doors open. its the only light going into the hall and I like to decorate. Do you have rooms in your house you just abandon. I’m proud of the entire apartment and I want her space to look nice. She appreciates it even though she doesn’t want to decorate herself.

There is not not enough room between the radiator and the wall. its touching.

Did she ask you to change the curtains? If not, then, DO NOT CHANGE THE CURTAINS!!! She is an adult who makes her own choices. If you don’t like those choices, close the door.

why do i need to defend myself? I put the curtains up. The black out curtains. I asked what I should do as far as putting something decorative over top. Why are people so nasty on this site? The worst platform I swear. It discourages me so much from using it.

There’s a difference in wanting everything to look nice, and taking over someone else’s space. Let your sister do what she wants, not what you want. It’s not "abandoning the room", it’s respecting the person who lives in it. And these are your private bedrooms, not your public spaces. She may not care how it’s decorated, but she will care if you ram a design on her. You could be the most loving sister ever, but if you cross these boundaries you could harm the relationship. Leave the room alone.

back to the curtain length... i'd hem them as long as you can and still tuck them. maybe 2" below the sill? funnels cold air down, and warm air up.

Someone just told me they make blinds that are for black out. Anyone have experience with those? I peaked in there this morning and these actually aren’t blocking much light.

An inset roller blind with shorter curtains over top might help. I can't help but think that having the register behind the curtain is going to make the room too cool.

That's a hard shift. She must never even see the daylight in the winter.

I would not put up the one long rod, but keep them separate.

I have these roller shades in my bedroom and they make the room very dark. You could put these up and then put the black-out curtains over them, hemmed to just above the radiator.

She luckily has 4 and 3 days off in a row. I’m going to look into a few options.

I always take her style into consideration with decorating her space. And obviously ask her opinion when choosing things like bedding and wall colors.

Its no different than paying a designer to do your space because you can’t deocrate or don’t want to. This is just free
