solve a painted banister disaster

we just bought house, contemporary style built in late 80s, former owner painted wooden banister all dark brown... poorly done and paint is peeling on the newel posts... plan on painting walls of room SW pure white and possibly painting front door yellow... what is best option hire someone paint banister a completely different color and do it right? hire someone to strip the paint and refinish the wood? replace the whole thing??PS the green kitchen is going to not sure what color yet!

Curious as to what is under the carpet on the stairway. Good wood? Would be nice to have the wood show and use a runner. Love the white posts and dark handrail as shown here. Could go as dark as black or a very deep brown as shown below in this inspiration pic. The posts just dissappear :)

Staircase remodels are VERY expensive as is painting. I had mine painted (was all white before) and it is tedious and time consuming work. That said it made a huge difference being painted. I’d price out both (painting and stripping/refinishing) and see what they come up with. Are you replacing the carpet runner too?

we totally want to replace the carpet too probably will do it at the same time but it's not as awful as the banister....I was thinking of painting the banister grey and white but now looking at the carpet it's brown and cream so definitely need to price out all the options thank you so much

that's a good question but I was highly doubtful there's wood underneath as the footboard trim seems to be just on the banister... I do love the black and white but for this house we are going for more Coastal / the Sea Ranch 5 so hoping for something a bit more organic... if we do we finish the stairs what kind of service person does that work? our painter was not interested!

Odd you say the house is contemporary (modern) in style, yet the banister is anything but.

I would remove it and replace with wrought iron and have no rug runner on the stairs.

oh definitely not modern like an eichler it's a late 80s style home with high vaulted ceilings and a loft feature :)

OK I am totally leaning to the white staircase with a darker handrail to save $$ at this time, really wish we could do stained wood instead but we have a lot of projects! I want to go for a bohemian/coastal vibe - would black be too stark for the railing?
