Range Hood Cover Help!

So are renovating the kitchen. Everything getting changed however cabinets will remain (they will be painted a soft white). Converting from a ductless to ducted hood so we are replacing the ugly black vent hood. Cabinet space over cooktop is 30”.

Question... carpenter coming next week to discuss the wooden hood cover I’d like made. Do you think it would look good to raise the existing cabinets to the ceiling (they are 10 foot ceilings) and have him put a flat arched valance underneath with a simple shelf (or no shelf)? Any other thoughts on what could work? The hood will need to be flush against the cabinets due to the ductwork.

Here’s my current kitchen...

Yes cabinets will be BM Simply White. I'm also thinking about boxing in the upper cabinets to raise them to the ceiling and adding crown. Not sure. Would love thoughts on that too. They are currently 42"

Are mantle hoods still a current look? Don't want something that's already passé.

They’re still putting in mantle hoods on the model houses I was touring this weekend ($2 mil +). I like them a lot, but I feel they’re more transitional than modern.

If you can absolutely do the crown to the ceiling. Makes such a big difference. See my before kitchen and my after kitchen...same layout basically but the upper cabinets and crown make a world of difference!

Three, I like your pictures that you posted....BUT.....Karen's after pictures are stunning!!!

If you can get your carpenter to do something like that!!! WOW!!!!

Also, see if you can get your plugs/switches moved under the cabinets, so they don't ruin the look of your backsplash. We used LeGrand Adorne under cabinet lighting system.

I wish the side cabs were symmetrical, but other than that, still in love.

Yes Karen's "after" picture look great. You can do something similar to what she did or not put a cabinet above the hood. The only thing I don't like about other pictures that were posted is that top cabinets aren't level with each other and that the hood mill work is raised compare to other wall cabinets. Aesthetically it looks better to level all the wall cabinets.

As for raising your cabinets to ceiling it all depends if your ceiling is leveled. If it's not, your contractor will have to modify the cabinet crown molding so that the bottom of all the wall cabinets align. Also need to make sure it will be comfortable to reach to things that are inside the cabinets if you do so.

Hope that was helpful to make your decision. Check this kitchen we did to help you make a decision.

Hello! I wouldn’t raise my existing cabinets higher because they are already 42” tall and the ceilings are 10 feet tall. I was thinking about just filling in the space above the cabinet and adding thick crown like here (still not decided on that though). I guess I don’t want it to look like an afterthought.

In regard to the hood. I am now thinking about just bumping the existing cabinet over the cooktop up to the ceiling (cabinet doors and all but I’d remove the knobs I THINK) then then put a crown shelf and then put an arched panel below) to kind of match what I have over my dining room entryway. Still now sure if I should have it arched or just straight across.

Thanks guys. Since you have a lot of crown work in your house already, I bet you can pull off the oversized crown look.

I like the hood your neighbor did.

Straight or arched is a design question tied to your overall plan. Are you changing doors and drawer fronts too? What style are you going with? The photos below with arched are styles we have been doing for well over ten years. When a client wants a more modern or even a current transitional look, we go straight.
