Hello Faith, Your rug should be big enough for at least the furniture legs to sit on it. Your walls are white and your furniture is black, so maybe a rug with a subtle pattern that pulls in those two colors, plus maybe another color or two to brighten up the room. Have fun!

I agree with the necessity for more color in the room. Is the room bright? Would you consider a modern looking carpet? You'd like a synthetic like polypropylene, correct, so you can shampoo it right up?

It doesn't sound like you want a busy oriental.... a contemporary design, maybe? Something "industrial" to play off the large railroad station clock?

If you're okay with doing color, one way to address the colored and non-traditional and pee-compatible is to get....... a rug in the yellow range....

That brown and black "aztec" above would work with piddle-pooches, too, but maybe along those lines a brighter "kilim" with colors, not neutrals?

thanks for all the responses. I get lots of light in this room, lots of windows and skylights int he hallway. The ceiling is actually quite tall in the living room, hard to tell in the picture as it's taken from the opening in the kitchen. The couch and love seat are black leather but the stressless chair is chocolate browned the tables and shelving are deep brown. The clock is brown distressed as well and mirrored. So the only black is the couch and chair. The dinning room table is charchol brown and the chairs are grey leather. The wall color is called "calm", the trim and kitchen are white and the fixtures/handles are all oil bronze including the lights. the handles on the cabinets are chrome. I love two of the carpets and will look them up especially the cappella and the one from horchow. Thanks again.
