Well that makes me happy. I've never met a viburnum I didn't like. It was being strangled by shrub honeysuckle, wisteria, and bittersweet.

sure is leaning out toward sunlight ...

i see the old stump there ...makes me wonder if some bird sat in that tree and planted a pre-fertilized invasive plant ... in other words... bells and whistles are going off in my head ...[more than normal i mean.. lol] .. as to the potential value of this free range plant ...

ken

ps: and the leaning could have been due to the tree stump tree ...

Yes, I'd bet it was not deliberately planted. The trees in this boundary strip are hemlocks and maples, the latter being the invaders.

The top picture of the leaves looks like Arrowwood, either Viburnum dentatum or Viburnum rafinesquianum, I forget what the difference is and it's too late to go look it up. The leaves in the bottom picture are maybe a little atypical because they're on those new shoots pointing straight up. Arrowwood leaves are pretty distincitive, with regular toothed edges and straight parallel veins. These look pretty beat up, but it's late in the season. Also there's yet another new invasive insect pest, the Viburnum Leaf Beetle that is doing a lot of damage to Arrowwoods right now.

learned from the Missouri Botanical site that the Indians used this viburnum‘s straight young shoots for arrows, hence the name. Look forward to nurturing it to its potential, so thank you.

The Viburnum beetle lays its eggs in twigs to overwinter, and that leaves distinctive marks on the twigs. I found photos on line. You can prune the twigs some time between now and early spring and either burn them or dispose of them in a sealed bag to reduce the Vib. beetle nibbling. IME V. dentatum was one of the more susceptible species as far as damage from the Vib. beetle, and I ended up shovel pruning mine because it was the only Viburnum I’ve grown that didn’t impress me, and the beetle damage made it truly unattractive. YMMV.
