Dog sitter rate

I just found out I have to work from the office instead of from home. All of a sudden I need to find a dogsitter for our 11 months old Cobberdog (Australian Labar-doodle), a sweet, calm, playful, and well behaved social butterfly. She is full potty trained, loves people & other dogs, and is used to staying home alone for 4 - 7 hours and has never caused any problems.

Luckily, the next door neighbor's high schooler is more than willing to dogsitting. Everyday when he comes home from school in the early afternoon, he would take our little girl out to walk and play for about one hour. He could also take her home to play with their two well behaved dogs. His mother is at home, so there is extra help available when it is needed.

What is the appropriate rate to pay him? Your input will be very appreciated.

sounds fair to me. how lucky you are to find a teenager who actually WANTS to work!! i live in the country, pretty far out and very isolated. when i had livestock and needed help hauling hay, etc., i could not find a single high school kid who wanted to work. even when i offered $100 for just 2 or 3 hours of stacking hay in the barn, they always said they were just too busy.

Around here for a dog sitter to stop by it's about $10 a visit. Not sure how long the visit is but I doubt it's for an hour. He'd probably be thrilled to make $50 a week for playing with your dog!

It depends on how long he has to care for her. Will he be watching her into the evening or will you be home around 5:30? If he's walking, playing, feeding and caring for her for several hours I would probably pay around $15. Here, in Portland metro area, basic doggie day care is $40/day.

In LA, I pay $25 at Petsmart and $48 for a boutique day camp for ten hours. A private walker charges around $20-30 for a 1/2 hour walk. I echo Nina--I'm green with envy that you have an enthusiastic young neighbor.

Have you asked him what he would charge?

Our young dogsitter and I reached the agreement on his "job responsibilities". When he gets home from school, he would need to let our little girl out, walk her and/or play fetch in our backyard. He is welcome to take her home or invite his two dogs over, so three of them could play together. Otherwise, once he walks her, she could stay home by herself until I come home. The only requirement is he is not allowed to spoil our little girl, as she is in dog training class, I don't want her to undo what she learned.

I checked with doggies parents in our dog training class for rate, some suggested $10 per hour, other said $40.00 per week.I also found out our neighborhood Petsmart charges $23.00 from 7pm -9PM. I asked him how much he would like to get paid, he said $10 per hour is plenty. It is the rate we agreed.

We both are very happy, as he just need to walk to next door for his small but stable job, I have peace of mind that our little girl could enjoy the comfort of our home, but also have him and other two dogs to play with. In case there is emergency, his mom is right at home to lend help. We both think this is a win-win arrangement.

huge win-win!!! i'm curious, how old is this young man? are you satisfied that he is responsible enough to walk your dog out and away from home? i just worry about something happening where your dog could get away from him. of course, i have 4 great danes and i wouldn't trust anybody to walk them out away from home even though they are good on leash.

just a thought i had. :)
