My kitchen has a multi-level countertop island, where the bar stool counter is taller than the rest of the counters. See attached picture. I think this was pretty common years back but may be somewhat less common in new kitchens today. The perimeter countertops are the same color as the island countertops.

I want to replace the sink with a large single-bowl sink, and I have been told that this will be difficult or impossible without replacing the countertop. I don't really want to incur the expene of replacing all of the countertops though.

Would it be insane to just replace the level of countertop in which the sink sits? I'd probably go with something dark to create a contrast. The result, of course, would be an island that has dark countertops at the sink level and the light countertops from my picture at the bar stool level and on the perimeter countertops.

I suppose the safer option would just be to replace all of the island countertops so that the bar stool level and the sink level counters are the same as each other (but different from the perimeter counters), and perhaps that is what I will end up doing, but I'm just curious if different counters on different levels within the same island is something that people actually do.
