Need color help for cabinets please

Last year I posted pictures of my kitchen looking for updating advice. The consensus was that I need a better layout--Agreed! I struggled to make a decision and only made minor changes by painting the walls, changing the light fixture, adding shelves, a new table top and chairs.

So here I am again looking to make minor changes to get me through another year or two until I can completely change this kitchen. My son is getting married next year so I won't be doing anything major this year.

My thought is just to paint the cabinets, which I will do myself, as I am not looking to pay $3,000 (the estimate I got) to have them professionally done. I'm confident that I can paint them well enough to last for a few years. But I cannot decide on a color! As you can see the granite is warm brown/rust colors and the floor is a gray/beige color. The walls are painted Edgecomb Gray, which I like but can change. Bright whites don’t work with the countertop and creams don’t work with the floor, walls, backsplash or white trim. Again, I’m not looking for a long term solution, just something that will lighten up the kitchen and to look good through the busy entertaining/holiday season for a year or two. I really want to get rid of the orange oak. I am committed to doing this. I removed the cabinet doors and will be cleaning, sanding and priming this weekend. Please help me find a color that will work!

Thanks for taking your time to look—all advice is very much appreciated.

small kitchen..do a light greige or greenish khaki.....if it is all getting redone in a few years. Some color would be nice[lean to greens] ....don't be too strict with "match " issues. Just find a bit of color that you LIKE. Myself, I would clean doors and change hardware and live with the wood. And instead: paint the table wall a strong color, bringing focus there which you have already initiated, add window treatment. Maybe get a glass door front for above the toaster cabinet and the one left of window....glass doors can "lighten it up" as you say.

    Thank you for the responses.

Dan1888 - the wall color is Edgecomb Gray. Thanks for paint link. I haven't 100% decided on which paint I'm using so I'll check that one out. I'm leaning towards BM Advance.

herbflavor - You are right that I should just clean and live with it! But I want to see if I will like white or colored cabinets when I am able to renovate. I like painting projects so I don't mind the work and the cost is minimal. There is a sunroom off the kitchen which makes the kitchen dark so I took off the window treatments when I painted the walls (not worried about anyone seeing in) and just haven't found anything to put up. I'll work on that. The cabinet doors are down, cleaned, sanded, grain filled and will be primed tomorrow. Still trying to find the right color! I'll look at some greige colors tomorrow instead of all the whites I've been sampling. Thanks for your suggestions.

Try painting them the same color as your walls. It will make the room less "choppy".

    Time is valuable.

I would not waste yours painting the cabinets. It's a lot of work to prepare cabinets by sanding , priming then painting. Too many factors that could not work out.

The kitchen looks ok as is. Patience pays. When the time comes, a better layout with new cabinets will be enjoyed.

1 obvious problem is the cabinet above sink is too low. the dishwasher is not right next to sink.

Besides later when you redo the kitchen as is, it will be a more exciting transformation ; )

What about whitewashing them? Will give a much lighter look and be brighter?

    Thanks for the responses.

I've been busy all day prepping and priming. Just working on the cabinets near the refrigerator this weekend. The Edgecomb Gray that's on the walls does not look good so close to the granite so it won't work for the cabinets. On the walls the beige color of Edgecomb comes out but on a sample door it looked too gray, How about if I paint the soffit the same color as the cabinets? I'd rather not repaint the walls (I painted them about 6 months ago) and I like the color. I think my top choices are White Dove or White Wisp but I don't have samples of them yet. Planning on painting Monday and Tuesday so I will be forced to choose! If you have any other suggestions for samples to try please let me know!

Artistsharonva: Yes, time is valuable, but I enjoy painting. I do most of the painting in my house and I like refinishing furniture. I have a few days off and my husband had plans so I had time to work on this (and it's been raining all weekend in NY). Yup, sink and dishwasher will be moved when I can do a full reno. Thanks for your feedback!

From the photos you posted, I can’t see why an off white wouldn’t work. It seems like the natural choice to me.

Townlakecakes: My problem was picking the right off white. I needed to find something to work with the warm colors of the granite and the slightly gray marble backsplash and Edgecomb Gray walls. I think I was overthinking it, researching too much about colors and couldn't make a decision.

First coat of Swiss Coffee is done. Not too bad so far!
