I would remove the stones and plantings on either side of the porch and extend the porch with pavers. Plant a shrub between the 2 skinny windows for height.

Charming house! I second the trellis suggestions, and would consider converting that whole lawn to a show stopping herb/potager/cottage garden. It’s made for it. You don’t need the privacy on that side and the corner fence establishes just enough boundary. The fun of living in a place like this is having a garden that passers by enjoy. I see a happy life in your future, getting to know neighbors and feeling like a contributor to the community. Sanctuary gardens have their merits but in my life of living in both, it has been in these houses that I was most content.

Thanks @yardvaark for the mock up. It helps me see that even a central larger shrub, and softening the corner to the door can do a lot. So maybe I dont necessarily need something tall or a trellis. Then maybe as my skills improve (this is my first yard :) ), I can add the trellis and slowly progress to full cottage garden. Thanks, @kitasei for your comments. Honestly, I don't care for the fence with the style of your home. You might get that removed for free by offering to give it away if taken away. I got rid of a chain link fence that way. Some dog breeders needed it and removed it in one afternoon. I too would remove the blocks around the portico and I would beef up the porch posts. As for the space between the windows, try a espalier of some sort. Here's a pear tree trained that way.
