The rough framing crew puts the house wrap on. You determine who does the rest by supplying the siding and windows yourself. Some siding requires specific procedures and may allow you to have a company rep on site to make sure it gets done correctly. Finish carpenter does the doors.

For our house:

Framer put on house wrap, installed the windows, installed the exterior doors.

Finish carpenter installed interior doors.

I think it depends on crew. Our framer said he has "a guy" that can wrap house cheaper than him, so he is subbing that project. Our framer will be installing windows. We are installing doors (but we're also doing trim work, etc).

Watch out for "a guy"...time for close supervision.

Also depends on the type of construction. Windows & exterior doors are done by dealers on better or higher projects due to the complexity of the systems and need for proper flashing integration. I would not have framers install even vinyl single hung windows. Depending on the type of siding I would have my siding installer do the hoouse wrap.

We didn't do Tyvek house wrap but instead did Zip System. Our framers put those up along with the Zip tape to seal the seams. Our windows and exterior doors were installed by the window company we bought our Marvin windows/doors from. Siding was done by a siding crew. Interior doors were done by my DH and I but normally would have been done by the trim carpenter.

GC is responsible, depending on bid specs, framer or siding installer.

Depending on technique, siding installers in the west are typically responsible for waterproofing their system, whether its wood/hardie, stucco or masonry. It may be different in your region.

In the west, you can buy windows from a showroom with or without installation. My preference is a single number that includes both.

Doors are typically purchased prehung from a local shop. Installed by a finish carpenter.

As owner-builder you decide who does what for every aspect of your project. You'll need to assess and compare the competencies of the various trades and their costs to install the housewrap. You'll also need to consider when it makes the most sense to install it given that the wall sheathing will be exposed to the elements until you do.

Perfectly stated, although I would have capitalized and bolded EVERY ASPECT. These are all part of the decisions you need to make when you assume the roll of the GC. You are responsable for everything. Every schedule, what trades do what, where, when and why.

Thanks everyone! I'm making sure I don't ask the framing guy to do what the siding guy definitely does. The points of transition between trades are those that are most ambiguous to me. It sounds like good conversations with each trade is best to determine experience and capability.
