Do you match the sinks in the kitchen???

We are starting our remodel, I am thinking about putting a Kohler Apron front sink in the counter. But what type of sink do I put in the island?? The same? Just a regular sink? Help!!

And does anyone know if they make a 36 inch Cast Iron Apron Front sink?

Thanks

My sinks match. I don’t think that it’s necessary. An apron and a regular are fine, so long as they are not side by side.

I would say either match the finish but not necessarily the style (so if the apron front is white, use an undermount white sink), or if your island is dark you could match your prep sink to the island top so it disappears. Either would look nice

They will be across from each other. The counter one will be across from the long side of the island ( about mid way down) and the island sink will be at the top of the short side of the island. Does that make sense? Island is 10 feet x 5 feet.

Apron sinks do not belong in islands. So just do a regular sink in the island.

We just put an apron front and an undermount in our kitchen and we like the look. I think that your apron sink will be your centerpiece and you don't want or need two centerpieces.

Can you post a tough sketch to show location of each sink? I think you could do your white apron on outer counter and on island possibly do a hammered copper. I want to know what your style is for home and kitchen.

Milesdog That is beautiful!! Love the way it looks. Thanks for sharing

As you can see from milesdog's kitchen (lovely, BTW!), keeping the sinks in the same family works very well. SS and SS or cast iron with cast iron.

If you want an apron front in your island, that would also work. These's no rule against it. In fact, we are putting in a Kohler whitehaven 30" in our cleanup area, and a 24" Kohler whitehaven in our island which will be used for prep (and both are apron fronts.)

"And does anyone know if they make a 36 inch Cast Iron Apron Front sink?" Yes. Also available at most Lowe's and Home Depot's.

I am a fabricator. Mixing and matching sinks is common but the fabricator has to be aware that the manufacturer supplied sink cutout relative to the actual sink can (and usually does) vary. The fabricator, in this instance, needs to inform the customer that the cutouts will differ and then offer to make them the same. Making them match is easily done by a competent shop. When they don't match it's usually considered a "mistake" by the fabricator even though the cutout is as per the sink manufacturers supplied template.

Why would an apron sink not belong on an island? That seems absurd but I'd love to hear the reasoning.

Nidnay You have the most beautiful kitchen!!! Love it so much! Like your pulls and knobs. What is your island counter top?

That is one gorgeous kitchen! I'm not a big fan of two sinks in a kitchen, but this placement is brilliant! All that chopping - right into the pan and the remains right into the sink and disposal (I assume there is one in that sink). And a big pot of water filled with a pot filler, would be easy to slide over that chopping block and be dumped right into that sink - no carrying it across the floor!

It takes a very large kitchen to be able to do a plan like this, but it is a brilliant one.

Thanks Stacie....island top is unfinished walnut (I only apply mineral oil on it).

My clean up sink under the window is a cast iron 36" Kohler Whitehaven and prep sink in the island is a 30" double ledge stainless sink that allows a cutting board and colander to stack over each other. I always knew that I wanted a workstation prep sink, so never gave it a thought that they should match. I also used different faucets but with a similar finish. No regrets.

She also has a “scullery” or pretty much a “working second kitchen.” This is a real showcase home. Nidnay did a totally awesome job!!

Thanks Anglophilia....yes, there is a disposal in that sink (and the other sinks as well :) ). Truth be told, I wish the sink was a little larger. For me and the way I cook, having the stove, prep area /cutting board, sink and then fridge mostly in a line with ample space in between is the VERY BEST layout for function. No dribbling wet produce across isles ..... everything flows perfectly. That being the case, there’s a lot that can be said for a large galley type kitchen.

Nidnay, have you posted a reveal anywhere? This is fabulous! Anglophilia, I see three sinks (but who's counting!).

Stacie - apologies for going off topic. I scrolled through some pictures and it's rare that both sinks are ever in the same shot, in my space. I think you're fine with different sinks AND different faucets if you wish.

Here's my Kohler Karbon and my Sin faucet (love the KK).

The island sink. Countertops are the same, so the sinks blend in.

My perimeter (cleanup) sink is a fireclay farmhouse sink, with light counters. My island (prep) sink is a metallic grey undermount silgranite sink, which blends in with my dark grey counter. The faucets are the same, but the perimeter one is champagne gold, and the island one is smaller and matte black.

Old bat ......(I enjoy typing that out)....no “official” reveal because even though we have moved in, the house is still a work in progress. Still no backsplash, hood needs painting, old furniture and rugs are being replaced etc. Here’s a link to pics of our New Build ....don’t judge the decor too harshly :)

nidnay - That was a treat. You had me at the first picture, what a fabulous space! I'm a little crazy about lighting and LOVE the fixture over your dining table. Your other lighting choice are inspired - clean lines and warm. Must admit, I am incredibly envious of your convection oven(s) to the right of the coffee area. (GRR, why did I not think of these?!!) I love your pantry! What a happy, beautiful space you have created.

Old Bat No problem.... I love seeing all the pics and learing!

Nidnay I am trying to do a Walnut counter top for my island also!!! But having a hard time finding one under 11!?! What state are you in? I'm in Southern California. I absolutely LOVE your home! What an amazing job you did. And how lucky are you all to live there!

Stacy.....We’re in the Carolina’s. I really lucked out on the top. The island is 8.5’ x 7’ and it cost $4000. I went to a local counter place here and the price was absolutely OUTRAGEOUS....way beyond my reach. The sales lady just happened to mention to me that a local wood counter guy had stopped by their store and gave them some information about his wood top business. I very casually asked what his name was and she actually gave it to me...why I don’t know. I did a search online and found info for him and his business. I contacted him and his work looked very good, and that was that. He also made the top in the scullery (maple).

Ha.....for what things cost in Southern Cal, you could live in a mansion here.

I love the Carolinas! I agree with you,,, that's why my oldest son want to move back there! He was stationed at Cherry Point and can't wait to go back. My island is 10 x5 so it 's been crazy trying to find an top. But I refuse to sacrifice my wood so I am going to keep looking. I'm convincing my hubby to go look for some reclaimed wood from some old barns

I love the look of a reclaimed island top. That actually would have been my first choice but I was so burnt out at that point from all the decisions and searching for things....i despise shopping around.

Old bat.....one thing about the french door oven....have you thought about what happens when you open the oven and pull out the racks to baste something and there is no oven door there to catch potential spills? It goes right on the floor of course. Never even thought about that until I actually used it for real cooking. Don’t get me wrong, the french doors are fantastic and it’s really nice to be able to use a wall oven without getting hit in the chest by a hot oven door and have free and complete access. But I will definitely be using the drawer below the oven (covered in foil) as a catch basin of sorts when I use the oven.

nidnay- Yikes! Thank you, never thought of that (frankly, didn't know they pulled out). To be honest, I'm very strict about how quickly the doors should be opened and shut (trying to keep oven to consistent temp). Basting a turkey means having DH open the door quickly while I remove the turkey, and then shut the door immediately. I place the pan on the cooktop area and I baste/turn, etc., and then we reverse the process. I can't imagine keeping the doors open over this period. (Full disclosure, I do have electric ovens so it may be very different with a powerful oven).

I always baste with the door open. I can’t imagine removing a huge turkey or pans of Cornish hens several times during cooking. I’m way too lazy for that. Probably why my birds take a little longer to cook :)

The oven racks come with nice, smooth ball bearing glides.

I am so jealous of that oven! Just what i need! I have burned myself 3 times on the one in this kitchen. That is totally awesome! You must really be enjoying that!!

My window sink is Kohler cast iron and my island prep sink is stainless steel. Also have small beverage center sink in SS. I think it’s ok to mix it up but then what do I know, lol.

Nidnay...I just realized you installed your ovens proud. So did I. Looks great. Cool oven.

Severe kitchen envy over here, nidnay!
