14x10ft bath & closet layout remodel

Hi Friends!

Recently purchased a 30 year old home with a tight and narrow bath/closet layout. See video and images below.

I would love your opinion on layouts that would best solve our current dislikes:

- Walkway is 2.5 feet wide and too narrow to open doors.

- Need about 2x the current amount of closet space.

-Shower is too small. Would like to have a double shower or just a larger glass shower in general.

-Would like a toilet only room.

-Do not need a tub.

Would like to avoid anything that will create a “narrow hallway” feel. Hope to achieve this by installing windows where able and strategically placing mirrors to "open" the space. Also will try to create a layout including diagonals of larger floor space, thus providing the illusion to a more open floorplan. The new shower will also be glass surround to open your visual distance across the room.

See attached images for layout inspiration. Note that inspiration may be in a larger scale than we can provide.

LIMITATIONS:

- space is only 10x 14 feet

-ceiling in the current closet and tub area can only be lifted by about 1 foot.

-the entry into the space must stay in the same location (we plan on installing a pocket door)

Have your completed a similar remodel or have advice on what can be done to eliminate our dislikes? I would love to hear your feedback and appreciate any advice you may have :)

I prefer the current layout. It has more closet space. Replace the tub with a shower. It won’t be as big as you want, but you can use a curved rod to give a little more space.

Some of the alternatives are awkward.

Hi Laurie,

You have a pretty difficult situation going on in that room. Things definitely cry for changes there. Since you have a vaulted ceiling, I would raise the ceiling in the lower end, it would make the space to feel bigger. On the other hand, I would opt for a pocket door in the toilet to save some space. I'd use nice and closed wardrobes, that can go almost up to the ceiling, giving you the extra space you need (with smart solutions, so you do not have to climb up and down to reach the top) With this you can incorporate two functions into one space.I would use the shower to be the star. I could not vote for any of the options, because I found them all to break up the space in little bits and pieces. Instead, I have created my own option. I used option G as a starting point. Let's see, if you'll like it. :)

I have a more fundamental question. In a 30 year old structure, are you sure you can move the toilet without incurring a huge expense. I don't think raising the ceiling on the lower side buys you much. You also seem to have pretty nice flooring, so changing the whole layout means a whole new floor throughout also costly endeavor. I also note there are electrical switches on walls you are intending to move so that is an expense. So do you have a 30-40K budget? The main economical change you could make is to replace the vanity and sinks in the existing footprint, and remove the tub and put a walk in shower in that space. Then super organize the closet space with two rods instead of single.

Before you decide on any of these... measure the space out and see if it's actually plausible. The sinks in your current layout are double the size of the ones in your alternate choices. That makes me think that most of the room may be out of proportion... Have you talked with an actual designer yet?
