I personally am not a fan of rugs under dining areas. Just seems like a lot of upkeep and hassle to me. What you are really wanting is softness; but there are other ways of getting it besides a rug. You could go with different drapery that makes more of a statement...hang them high, wide and make them kiss the floor. That would be stunning. And/or you could do some upholstered dining chairs to get the softness you crave. These can come in fabrics that are stain resistant! If you are set on a rug, something like a neutral sisal would definitely go with what you have going on. Hope that helps! Follow me on Houzz and blessings to you!

The scale of design and muted pattern of the rugs below seem appropriate to not fight with the large scale pattern of the rock around the fireplace. You might consider muting the affect of the rock in time

You could stain the rock to lighten the appearance.

Thanks Beverly. I have thought about lightening the rock before. I do like the warmth of it since it is a lakehouse. The rug I show is new so I really need to work with it. I could use it under the table???? I agree tho, I don't want it to fight. Do you know how to go about the staining?

Thanks Missy. I thought about doing something neutral under the table (trying to protect the new hardwood). Then I could do something fun on the chair cushions to balance the rooms. I will need drapes but I will post that separately.

A few things to keep in mind. You have a large and busy space so an area rug can either slip into the background as a neutral or you can use color and pattern to more clearly define and separate the dining room space from the rest. You have those pretty light blues working in this room, why not choose a rug that features some of those colors to tie the space together and yet also visually define the dining room -- both at the same time!

Also, neutral rug and neutralizing the stone work by staining it only makes the entire space appear neutral. With such a beautiful fireplace why not highlight it instead and make it the focal point of the room? Especially for a lake house, the combination of natural materials -- stone fireplace, hardwood floors -- I think makes it a standout.

Yes you can use the existing rug, but I think your glass table is so very dwarfed by your furnishings and is a bit out of character for the room itself, that is what I would change out. Maybe two tables that can be moved around will work best with your recliner sofas.

Thanks for the input. The room has a regular sofa and two leather chairs. I used the glass table to lighten up the room and show off the rug.

I agree with Beverly with staining the stone. You do not want to make the room too busy by adding in too many non-matching patterns.

With so many other textures and colors in the room I would go for a more neutral colored rug!

To protect the floors under your dining table, the rug should be 36-42" larger than the table top all around so chairs can be pulled out and sat in without falling off the rug. Pull them out, sit in the, get up and don't push them back in. Then use painter's tape to tape out a rug that will cover the area and protect the floor from your chairs. Go up one size if the measurement you get isn't a standard rug size.

I love mixing patterns, personally, perhaps if the living room is floral, maybe go with a muted striped one in the same color palette.

I am back to square 1 with the rug selection. For under the dining table I found the same rug in a larger size. Great price too! Would it be too much to have the same rug under the table as in the family room? The family room rug is an 8x10 and the other would be a 9x12. Is that too big? I could remove the 2 chairs by window.

I like your rug but would remove the art on either side of the fireplace and find a lighter blue throw and sofa cushions for a softer, more harmonious feel. For the dining room try something like this one from esale.rugs.

I think you are right about the art on sides of fireplace. I will scale that back. I have a softer aqua throw and pillows to try too. Do you like the duplication of the rug for the dining area? It is on sale for a great price.

birdkkk, has anyone answered your question about using same rug, different dimensions in the d.r.? If not, could you get a very good closeup of the l.r. rug from opposite side of sofa?

The rug is an 8x10 in the family room and the dining area would be 9x12. It would take up much of the dining area.
