Here's an idea for a rug: cream-colored wool sheepskin look.

One chair and a smaller,lower coffeetable will make a big difference. So would a new rug.

We have a German Shepherd and his hair is never ending so it really seems to come right off a hide rather than other rugs. So I have gotten rid of all the rugs in the house. Definitely a rectangular coffee table. 22" from sofa arm to wall, how deep is the chair? Ideally the front of the chair would not cross the front of the sofa, and obviously the chair back shouldn't be hitting the wall.

Hi greenfish1234, I believe the chair arm will cross the couch, although it will meet at the inside of couch arm. The couch arm is wide and boxy. And I could angle the chair and push it further to the end of the wall near arch wall opening. Hoping that will work? I'm still undecided, because it's non returnable if it's too big. Being that it is an open chair with the wood back/arms, I feel it could work. I hope!

I've got to tell you, I think you're forcing it. Put the smaller chair in the space you would put the new chair, push it up so that it is as close to the sofa as it would be if it were larger. Take some pictures from straight on and other angles so we can see how the chair interacts with the sofa arm? I'm big on mock ups , so any way you can mimic the size of that chair and its location will be really helpful to you and us in trying to help you.

Hi greenfish1234, So I have positioned the chair (on an angle) where the hide chair will come out past the couch, and if you see the front little leg on the little table next to the chair, the 2nd leg from the left (closes to the chair), that crosses over another leg, that is how wide the chair is. Hope the visual helps. There won't be a table there if I get the chair. For some reason to my eye the light color of the chair and being that it's wooden armed and not a large upholstered chair is making me think it could work.

Ok. It's a bit cramped but 1) you are right the style makes it work better than if it were solid 2) you love it so let's try to make it work.

-Why is angled out? Are you not able to fit it perpendicular to the sofa as Grover showed? That would look best. Second best would be angled TOWARD the sofa

-are you sure it won't be touching or nearly touching the wall given the front is where the front of the current chair is? The current chair looks very close to the wall.

Try it like this to maximize space from sofa, but don't let it impede walkway.

Unless you can move the sofa down, there isn’t enough room for that size chair. Can you “force it”. I suppose but why? What is it about this chair you love so much. Find a smaller one that will work.

Would it be possible to lose the small, drum-like end table (I think that's what it is) next to the couch and scoot the couch over just a tad in that direction? That would leave a little more room for the chair on the other side.

Flo, as to what I like about it, it's the style, the wood, the hide. It's fun and artful/different. Not your typical chair. Statement peice I guess.

Another thought: Would it be possible to switch the positions of couch and chair, with the couch nestled beneath the passthrough window?

This is one of those spaces where you WANT the walls. My friends knocked down the wall between their kitchen and narrow dining room and were twisted in knots trying to plan an island to replace the wall. I told them to can the island and move their large farmers table up "in" to the kitchen end instead. It works so much better than a narrow little island would have. But this isn't even a dining room! You would lose all semblance of living room here, and say goodbye to your accent chair.

I wouldn't occlude the arm of the sofa with the chair unless you angle the chair toward the sofa rather than away. There is no reason for the chair to face the fireplace anyway.

The more I look at it the more the rounded back of the chair under the rounded hole in the wall bothers me. It just looks off to me. How else can you set up the room?

You love it? Just get it! If they make your heart go putter patter, you will regret not getting them. The chairs are awesome! If you have to hire a local designer to come in for a consult to help with placement, do it. As an alternative to just getting one under the arch, What about setting them up in front of your windows and finding another home for those large white loveseats? They would make a great conversation area.

Hi lauralcollins, unfortunately the roll arm chairs under the window have to stay. There's no other space for them, they are comfy, so we use them. if i do get the chair, it would just be one. Thank you for the feedback!!

Ok now one last attempt for scale. This cushion represents size, however it's 3 inches wider than the chair, and I have it positioned 3 inches from wall depicting how far it would come out. I'm feeling scale wise it could work and not feel or look too cumbersome, hope i'm not wrong? Again, thinking because it's not a full upholstered chair it will feel as if it's not taking up as much space??

Not a designer or even a little bit of an authority on what works in a room, but I love that chair. If it were mine, I’d find a way to work it in whether other people agreed with my decision or not.

To some extent, our homes really ought to break a few rules. I think that just comes with personalizing things.

Sometimes,ya gotta break a few rules to not build a space that looks like a dull,staged,static real estate photo. That said, are you OK with breaking the rulez? Look closely at the pics below,rule breakers everyone! Heck,some of these decoratin' miscreants broke multiple rulez in one photo!

I think I'm going to spring for it!! Worst case I have a chair I love that's a little larger than it should be.Hoping the juxtaposing styles work.

@corrine, the chair is called the Maraa occasional chair. I found it at a local furniture store, I did look on line and you can order it on line from 2 places. I've been eyeing it since spring, but couldn't bring myself to pay $1200 (what they had it priced for locally). It was one of those things I couldn't get out of my head, and when I saw it on sale I had to go for it.

You will enjoy that chair for years to come. So happy for you. I think you could scooch (technical designer term-lol) it a bit closer to the coffee table. A bigger rug that anchors your whole seating arrangement would really make the space feel bigger. You can always layer the hide on top of a rug.

Thank you everyone! Thanks Flo, I'll have to entertain a rug. Although my husband like to see wood and we have a german shepherd, therefore the hair doesn't come off of rugs as well as they do the animal hides in my experience.

I also want either shelves or something next to fireplace. Maybe 2 pieces on either side that match? But my current chest works. I might just change out my shelves and stick with my chest I've had for years.

I took a few pictures of some things at the furniture store that struck me the other day, but not sure. Don't want everything too rustic, but do want something that has that primative feel similar to chair.

Could replace my current chest that's on other side of fireplace with this, and it would fit better, or do 2 of these or something similar, these are not as deep as my current piece.

What you don’t need in this room is more bulky looking pieces. Find a drink table for that new chair. Many great ones out new this fall. I will post some. Bbl

You know, to Flo's point , I wouldn't even put slim consoles by the FP. You need some empty space or it can start looking like a furniture shop. No more, and maybe less than what you have. Art on the walls only would be nice.
