What is your budget? The more you can spend, the more you can get.

Looking to spend 5-6k.

I am not one to paint cabinets - but the floor is a different style and color tone then the cabinets. If you are happy with your layout, consider refacing with new doors - probably in white. Then, as appliances die, change them to stainless. I would consider changing the fridge and range hood sooner than later as the black against the white cabinets can be a little stark. Do not do a small, busy, mosaic tile backsplash in any event - they are no longer popular. There are some exceptions if you go with white cabinets, but get some advice from the pros here before using that kind of backsplash.

In my own kitchen, I kept the wood cabinets, changed to light counters, light subway tile backsplash and apron front sink. It was about $6000 - and my kitchen is smaller. If you do not have under cabinet lighting, get some.

I find door cabinets like these with center posts to be the least usable. I'd get a new induction cooktop and some new cookware. And plan to save for a complete redesign. Because the floor is new I'd get some extra square feet of the product to accommodate a future layout change. I wouldn't paint these cabs even as a diy project.

Stain lower cabinets and oven and refrigerator cabinets black. Re-face and paint the cabinets above the countertops white or off-white, using as many glass doors as you can.

Save up the money for a cabinet/countertop/appliance replacement. Start your planning now. Pick out the countertop material, but not style. Pick out the type of finish for appliances, faucet, pulls, but not the style. Pick out the style and color for cabinets. Troll your local big box, kitchen showrooms, IKEA. Once you have the money, get specific on styles. We planned for a year, and gave our contractor a three ring binder stuffed with our choices. He was impressed! Be willing to make changes. Our contractor suggested running the engineered wood flooring through the kitchen, great idea. We got the kitchen we wanted.

If you change the layout you will have to contend with the floors. Cheaper to keep the layout and try to use what you have. Unless you have extra flooring....

So if you keep the layout you could keep the lowers cabs and take the uppers down. Use floating shelves for the uppers for as much as you can. But this could be challenging with the hood and the cabinet above the refrig. You could buy a really cool hood for the range. This photo shows the idea but I would not paint your cabs white. Rather I agree with MSMbennet to stain the lowers a dark color. It would hide any imperfections and then you could find shelves to be similar to the wood tone in the floors. A SS hood or even black combo hood could add a touch of modern.

Spend money 5k-6k on wall tile, a new hood, floating shelves, Some stock cabinets to remove the built in desk, paint the walls and maybe a modern light fixture.

Keep your appliances, floors, counter, (If they can cut the 3 inch min splash) ...

Do you need the built in desk? You could find stock cabinets and built a giant floor to hood height cabinets.. Stain them the same color as your lowers and that could store most of your upper cabinet stuff.

Keep the counters as they look like they are in good condition and counters can be expensive. Have a tiler come in and tile a full wall backsplash and remove the 3 inch mini backsplash. A tiled wall with floating shelves can be very modern and contemporary looking.

Change the built in desk to a wall of cabinets bought from Lowes or IKEA

sorry but the budget is very tight. I will cost 1/2 that to have the cabinets painted properly.I have done some nice kitchen renovations with 20K so that s a realistic budget if using Ikea and a large amount of DIY cabinet assembly.IMO save until you can do a proper renovation since there are a few things that need to be addressed that I can see even without pics of the whole space.

Kitchen is very expensive but as other said your can paint it and change the hardware! You can do this for now and save money for major kitchen reno later. There is a Rust-Oleum cabinet transformation DIY kit that you can find at Homedepot and Lows for painting your cabinets, it is not that hard. Also Paint your walls it will make a big difference.

The color and door style make your kitchen look dated. Ask Home Depot to send someone to do an estimate on just refacing the doors. Then you’ll have an idea of what that option would cost you
They can also price appliances and countertops. Working with real numbers helps.
You’re going to have to do this either piecemeal or later on when you have the budget to do a full remodel all at once. Unfortunately, $5-6k doesn’t go that far in today’s kitchen.
