Art Help - Formal Living Room

last modified: 7 years ago

In the process of remodeling our entire main floor, and having an issue picking art work for above this sofa. We are thinking it need to be black and white something (photo, painting, drawing) with white mat and a frame. Just can’t figure out what that “something” should be, and if there should be one large or a series of pieces. Attached is photo of room. The coffee table in screenshot is arriving Tuesday. Any ideas appreciated!

Flo - these are great, really like the first set. For comparison's sake and to show more of the style we are going with, see the attached before and afters. (Still in progress)

Okay John - I think we were separated at birth. Your style, shade pallet is so much like ours AND I see you have Byers Choice Carolers? Me too. Lol.

LOL, we love them too! Many more make an appearance for Christmas. Dare I ask about Department 56 houses?

Ok i have several more concepts for you to consider. Your room is monochromatic and soothing. Also, quite traditional so i am thinking botanicals might not be best choice so here are a couple other ideas. These are so beautiful and look MUCH better in person and would add a bit of drama. The photo i am attaching shows the silvery frame of these better. They are on the wall above the buffet.

Another idea is to download some Chinoiserie prints and work with your artist friend to mat and frame them for custom size and look.

Did you notice i put a neutral rug in your room! Lol. What size is that coffee table? Worry it might be too long for the sofa size?

I'm actually not opposed to either of these ideas! And, my god, they are so cheap! We were prepared to spend upwards of 5,000 for a piece in this room. I had looked at rugs somewhat similar to that and would have mentioned that before if I knew how to describe that style!

The coffee table is 55" and the sofa is somewhere around 90" depending on where you measure the arm I believe

I am verifying the size of the large silver pieces. I really think they would be spectacular in your room and give the space some wow factor. But they are large. I'm checking on the size right now. bbl

Ok, that works then (the coffee table I mean). Good. A rug would need to be under the front legs of the sofa and over to your chair. Depending on the space between the living room and the dining area. You have done an amazing job of renovating this home! It is really special!

John, yes!! Department 56 ‘Dickens A Christmas Carol’ - I have collected for years. Oh wow, I didn’t know someone like me existed lol. They’re simply beautiful during the Christmas season.

Thank you, Flo, for all your help and kindness! When we built the home 15 years ago, we made some mistakes. We were very locked in with color and wanted to fix it this time around, but now are at the opposite extreme but love it. I think once we add art and decor in the other living room (on drive link) it will balance quite nicely. Still need chairs for in the window of that room (kitchen chairs are placeholder there right now) but debating on whether to match the sofa color or do a blue solid or other color print I think we could add enough interest with pillows on solid matching chairs but don’t want to make mistakes in the opposite extreme again. Any thoughts? I say blue because the office glass doors show the mildly blue wall color in that Room.

@iheartsix, not sure what you are referring to? But John, the Uttermost framed art pieces are 23w x 21h so I believe they would fit very nicely. But I would want you to map them out and test a template on your wall before you went ahead and ordered them. But I can tell you, I have used them in 3 different homes and slightly different styling too and they look marvelous in each setting. I can also get you my Trade Discount of 5% on anything from Houzz. Just email me at manganflo@gmail.com and I can get with my Houzz Trade Rep and get you a code to use for purchases and get that extra 5% off!! They put a small amount in an account for me too make Houzz purchases as well, so kind of a win/win. But primary importance is getting items you love!

Funny, but I kept leaning to blues too! the butterflies caught my attention with the blues. Of course the silvers lend themselves nicely to blues as well.

    Love that wall color!
Great desk and I love the pairing of the contemporary lamp! Nice touch! Might need to steal that rug for the living room! Looks perfect.

Glad you like it! I may just have to try moving it in there for inspiration. That was a home goods find!! Everything in the house is somewhat open so using blue through out may be a good accent color

It really is exciting! This year was both mine (today actually) and my wife‘s 50th birthday and our twenty year anniversary so this renovation was our gift to each other. But once the coffee table comes in I will do the art templates and shoot you an email. I really appreciate all the help! Runner up would be the horizaontal abstract with some blue in it from your original suggestions. Do you know where that’s from? I might have another place for it If not in the formal living room.

If I did the conversion of cm to inches I think it is approx. 50" x 50" That would be stunning over the sofa IMO. Congratulations on your anniversary and birthdays. Great gifts to each other. Enjoy your celebration!

Celerygirl- you both have great ideas. Would you be able to do a mock of with this blue abstract and the second rug you selected?

btw, another reason to use a somewhat more abstract painting is it puts a "younger" touch on all your traditional features and that mix is always pleasing. As long as it isn't too stark.

you know when something just speaks to you - I really like this painting. I may order this one first after table comes and if it doesn’t work I can always order the silver framed ones

Table is in! I agree with everyone, we definitely need a rug. I am thinking we need to pick that before ordering artwork. Does anyone have specific suggestions for rugs?

Do you want to incorporate some color in the rug or keep it more neutral?
    John Cuck thanked Molly

I think neutral. Add color with art and pillows which are more easily Changed

Nice looking space. Straighten your lamp shades and remove the plastic, not necessarily in that order.

The lamp shades actually came in as two different colors, leaving the plastic on until I ship them back after the new ones arrive

Hi I just found this while searching white goods, I could not resist taking a peek AND I don't have time :) I am a past interior decorator and Artist. I know there is a lot of deco Art but I was just wondering if you can not do a search on local artists through FB. Amazingly you can get some wonderful Art from local emerging artists that is very inexpensive. I am a terrible Art snob as far as I just so dislike Deco Art. I believe rooms can come alive with a real work that is of your taste and has substance and character. Art can work with a room and not be similar. Buying Art for your room may take you some time but it is such a fun experience where you go to showings or visit studios and chat to the Artist. only my point of view :) now back to searching Tappanyaki's . By the way the other advice has been very good just not my opinion.

Having a little blue and silver in each room is a good thing. Love your home and patio. Great taste.
