I had one for about 10 years, very convenient! I had also scissors and a stainless spoon rest on it, it really served a purpose .I eventually got tired of looking at it and cleared out a space inside a drawer for my knives.

I made space in a drawer for the knives, but my husband really wants a few accessible. I'm not thrilled with the idea to be honest.

Yeah, mine missed it for a little bit too, luckily most husbands are retrainable :)

I have one and it works great for me, BUT I definitely wouldn't put holes in a new backsplash to put one up. Tell your husband he can have on if he figures out a way to install it that doesn't involves holes in the new backsplash.

I have a strip (but it didn’t require drilling through backsplash)...it’s terrific, I like it better than the block as I can see all the knives (and the cheese slicer, and the scissors, and the honing blade, all of which sticks to the strip).

My husband suggested attaching it to the underside of the cabinet instead..

We put in a couple and mounted them so that the screws went thru the grout lines.

My son didn't want to put holes in the wall in his apartment, so he got a magnetic knife holder that stands on the counter.

I ditched my knife block and utensil crock to get as much off of the counters as possible so they're all in a Rev a Shelf pullout now. Everything stays dust free. Reaching under a cabinet to grab a knife might not be the safest choice so here's another mounting option, but frankly I wouldn't want to do this either. Cutco's Space Saver Block (#1746) might be a good compromise, and looks like it easily stores flat in a drawer if you want to move it off of the counter.

I would not risk putting holes in a glass blacksplash to do a magnetic knife strip, but I've become a fan of magnetic knife storage. I got a lovely magnetic knife block that sits on my counter instead. Alternate magnetic strip storage I've seen includes under the cabinet (unless it conflicts with any undercabinet lighting) and inside a cupboard door.

Would heavy duty command strips work? I used them for a fairly heavy mirror once. I personally don’t like magnetic knife strips. I use an in drawer knife block. I just hate the idea of an intruder coming in and seeing the knives immediately. It’s probably irrational, I know.

I mounted my magnetic knife rack on the bottom of an upper cabinet. You can't see it from eye level (I'm 5'4") but it is easy bend my head to grab a knife. My family loves the convenience.

This works best if you have a light rail to hide the rack.

I can't seem to attach a picture but if you google "Under cabinet magnetic knife rack" you will see some pictures. Mine is not one that pulls down, it is mounted directly to the cabinet bottom so that the knives are on the surface facing the coutertop.
