Which climber? Who is the rose? Some own root plants should be left alone for at least 2 years and not pruned to grow roots and build up strength.

The Rose is Golden Showers grafted to Fortuniana Root. I understand leaving it for two years but with so many small canes to start should cut back to just a few "pencil width" ones to start?

I think you should probably let it get established before pruning. If you cut it back, it will spend energy making and growing canes instead of anchoring roots. As it grows now, though, you can train it in the shape you want. Good luck with your rose.

I would also let it get stablished before pruning. In your zone maybe you can shape it some in a year instead of two. I wish you luck with this rose. It was the first rose I got rid of in my garden because the blooms shatter immediately after opening here. If you aren’t totally invested on it, maybe looking around for another yellow climber would be a good idea. If you don’t mind it’s flaws it certainly is a survivor.

Thanks for the tip everyone my concern is there seems to be too many laterals canes shooting up all over. I am going to try to pillar this baby. I also planted a Sombeuil near by.

Start the training from the earliest opportunity using the growth as it comes along. That means now is not to early.

The canes you have are the baby canes. Let them grow, and new larger canes will grow. You need the baby cane leaves to make food to strengthen your plant. Cute nickname, Sheesh. Sadly, I don't have a nickname.

I just noticed the first post did not show the Golden Showers picture. My concern is, here are so many canes for the one obelisk. The Sombeuil is much more suited to what I had in mind. This picture is of the Golden Showers. I have tied 4-5 of the canes in but still feel like there will be too many. (didn't cut the untied ones). I'll try to take a picture later today of it tied in.
