Sad shrubs need to go. More and more my thinking is that we need to rethink our paradigm of wrapping the foundation with evergreen shrubs. It’s a ranchhouse so I would go with a plant variety involving native grasses and flowering perennials intermixed with some architectural shrubs. A small tree to the right of the garage on that very blank wall. I don’t know where you live but seek guidance from local native plant organizations and websites for inspiration. Google native plants or Audubon plant recommendation followed by your zip. If you haven’t looked at his Landscapes check out Piet Oudolf for inspiration. Thank Prairie

If I would wrap the porch columns in cedar, What I think that to match the new gray garage door and windows? If I left it Cedar, do I put any kind of a finish on ?

Matching the contemporary windows all around would be a priority for me. That would mean doing something with the picture window and the little iron trimmed window. I would eliminate all the iron elements possible. Which door do you want guests to use? Make that one as friendly as possible. Wider steps would help. Full glass storms that expose your great doors and are painted the same will mean a big difference. I would upgrade the lanterns to contemporary ones if you go that direction with the windows. The biggest difference you can make will be with landscaping. Replace the fountain and urns with contemporary elements. As stated above, naturally adapted plants from Indiana will make for a great look, low maintenance and long lived ones. Painting all the white trim another color can make a big change. Work with the color of the roof and the stones to find the right shade.

If it’s in the budget, enlarge the windows - especially the largest one (which could go to the floor and come forward the depth of the eave). Change all the window frames to a darker colour so they become less anonymous. Consult a good garden designer.
